No doubt their fans are. But I think that the ones who have run the company over the decades are just spying for cash right. I mean thats probably the primary reason they didn't sign Roman Catholics for so long. Above all else! Their fans hate catholics, so why would they put a catholic in the starting 11? Ticket sales would drop. Graeme Souress just realised that there are way too many good players who happen to have been baptised that couldn't be ignored. He was still a * tho, but wise enough to realise that much

reason they didn't sign Catholics where to please the planters that had shipyard experience and latched on to the closest "biggest" club on the Clyde shipyards, Rangers F.C or as a like to call them, the zombies

The Tory government in the early 1980s discussed the possible forced removal of the Irish Tricolour from celtic park, newly released Government papers have revealed.Following a public request at the height of the troubles,Conservative ministers concluded that while the flying of the Tricolour could constitute 'tacit support' for the Provisional IRA,it fell outside the Government's control.Plans were shelved shortly after.

Gerry Gough, a contributor to the Celtic Minded collection of essays and a lifelong Celtic fan, said of the news:''It is disturbing, but not wholly surprising, that those who have been given the privilege of power in Britain had not only sought to abuse it,but to further alienate a minority community who have been persecuted ever since their arrival on British shores.''It,s high time that British politicians educated themselves properly on Irish history so as to come to an understanding of the country,it's people and its politics, rather than contemplating policies that pandered solely to the most racist and jingoistic in our society.''

Mr Gough stressed the importance of the Tricolour for the Irish community in Scotland and referred to previous attacks on the flying of the Irish flag at Celtic Park, such as in1952,when SFA President Harry Swann, ironically of Hibernians, led the charge for it to be removed from Celtic's Parkhead ground along with Secretary George Graham.''The aspiration towards an Irish Republic for Catholic,Protestant and dissenter is a noble one and this is equally reflected in the Irish Tricolour itself; an equally noble flag,'' said Mr Gough.''

The Irish people and the Irish Diaspora worldwide treasure their flag, are rightly proud of it and have defended it from any attack such as this, just as Celtic director Bob Kelly did in the 1950s when the Scottish footballing establishment similarly wished to see the Irish Tricolour removed from Celtic Park.''

People reading this thread and not overly aware of the events may think that Bob Kelly was the ultimate 'good guy' - fact is, he was far from this. In many ways Romanov at Hearts is like a watered down version of what Kelly was to McGrory and the club as a whole. Kelly also knew that he would lose his 'custom' had he gone along with this, especially as the team that had been put out on the park since the early days of WWII, 10 years before, had been pretty dire. If there wasn't the sense of Irish community to rally around then the club would have lost much more, and the Irish flag was the ultimate symbol; the heart of the communal core.

That's not to say that what Kelly did here was wrong, because it isn't - indeed this is one of the few times that he did genuinely act in the club's best interests, but there is more than what meets the eye here.
