In my opinion it was a very fluid 3-5-2, seemed like Izzy had more defensive resposibiltiy then Cha, or maybe he just didnt have the fitness to cover the ground yet. I think Wanyama and Mulgrew are perfect for a back three because their ability as defenders as well as their skill on the ball. And Rogne is just a beast. When Matthews, Forrest and Kayal are fit I think they would fit right into this formation...only question is where would Broon fit in if everyone is fit?

Imagine this lineup though, home or away I think it would dominate.

    --------------------------Forster-------------------
    ----------------Wanyama-- Rogne ----Mulgrew------
    -----Matthews--------------------------------- Izzy--------------
    --------------------Kayal----------Ledley---------------------
    --------------------------Forrest------------------------------
    ---------------Hooper------------Stokes/Watt :celt_2:-------

Lustig would probably be included. Big Johann spoke of changing our formation to this when he arrived at the club.

Could work quite well its also easy to change it into something more attacking when needed without changing much.

Wanyama looked excellent at right-centreback with Cha he was able to go on runs and he just bullies * for fun.

Worked well for the first time its been used.

Was trying to search for a 3-5-2 Thread I'm sure there's been one recently,.... 3-5-2 gives us so many more options, we're so strong in the middle of the park and 3-5-2 gives us better variety!!

    FORSTER

    ...................LUSTIG/NEW CB......ROGNE/WANYAMA.... ....MULGREW........

    MATHEWS/FORREST....KAYAL/WANYAMA....BROWN....LEDLEY.IZZY/SAMMY

    .....................................COMMONS/FORREST......................................

    ..........................HOOPER/STOKES...............NEW STRIKER...................

The beauty of this system is the flexability if we play Izzy and Mathews it can become a 5-3-2 and we can also be very offensive with a little tweaking. Worked well for MON as well. I really think we would smash every team in the league we should play to our strengths which is a strong midfield. :shamrock:

It's a weapon in our arsenal. I thought we switched to it seamlessly which is encouraging.

Man i love this team just now! So good, with loads of good prospects coming up, all young, no one old and retiring (maj doesnt count lol) home growing talent. Man it really feels like something special is on the cards soon. Europe here we come!!!!

IMO Forrest isn't really a no.10 - would rather play Commons or even McGeough there.

I was thinking of the match against Killie when we went down 3-0 and he was moved behind the strikers and gave there defense nightmares.

I enjoyed this formation today, the back three were absolutely solid today for it being the first game using it! Will be interesting to see if Lenny and bhoys stick with it for the remaining games, who knows what could come of it!

I agree with the last bit, which is why I don't want to see a 3-5-2.

A 3-5-2 essentially means playing fewer midfielders, and more centre backs.

Centre backs is where we are weakest, so let's only play two, instead of three.
And let's not put defenders (Matthews, Izzy) in our midfield either.

Would far rather see attackers (Forrest and Sammy) in our midfield.

I know for some it harks back to MON, but I disliked the way he set us up. We walked out in Seville with a team rammed to the gunnels with defenders and defensive midfielders. Basically the same sort of setup that we lambasted Walter Smith for in their UEFA Final season.

I think there's a reason hardly anyone plays 3-5-2 now, and I'd prefer it if Lenny's experiments took some other form...

The centre-backs don't need to be the likes of Loovens...we could convert Kayal or Ledley to play there, Barca-style.

Good option to have and we should look at it again this season and maybe pre season .

We need Brown against the huns. Is he fit/going to be fit? He could take the place of Kayal for the derby.

I'd love to see Paddy McCourt start as well. Take Forrest out and put him on the bench and put Paddy in the starting 11. He'll probably be off this summer and he was magnificent against Motherwell and I really, really, really want to see him score against the filth.

not a huge fan of the formation but it worked okay today considering it was new personally I wouldn't feel comfortable playing it against an attacking side like dundee who would run a mock against it. it could be used to good effect against the less attacking teams because it would give us more options and allow us to keep them in their own half so I would only use it in specific games where we know the opposition will sit in

I didn't like the amount of space they were finding down our left hand side. Not sure whether this is just Izzy not tracking back or Humphrey just having too much pace for him. It was a very fluid system, Wanyama seemed to be playing as a right winger at times. Not sure what was happening with Hooper/Commons though. At times it seemed like we were playing more of a 3-4-2-1, with Hooper and Commons just behind Brozek. Hooper's ineffective there for me, played far too deep, Commons definitely seemed to be further up.

Yes but this isnt a defensive 3-5-2, and is it really fair to call Wanyama and Mulgrew Centre Backs? Both have shown they have the technique and skill level to play in midfield, as well as defend. And I know its been a long time since weve seen a fully fit Izzy but there were times last year he was so good going forward that I remember someone starting a thread wanting him as a left winger. And honestly our CM's lack some creativity, Ledley, Kayal and Broon are primarily workhorses, not rugged defensive midfielders but box-to-box midfielders if you will.

Everybody saying it worked well, i dont think it was any better than normal, if it wasnt for zaluska(2) and ledley sprinting back to intervene we would have lost 3 goals with all these defenders
I'm in the camp of more attackers is best !!

Brown would be perfect for Matthews right wing back position. I would even have him starting ahead of him. Nothing wrong with competition though.

    Brown needs to start. Definitely.
