I was being serious when I said I know the Scotland boys, almost every single one of them is exactly that a boy in a mans body. I've witnessed Richie Gray crying because someone told him off for spilling a drink.

The majority of rugby players are private school boys with no real life experience, getting punched in the face doesn't happen to them that often.

Can assure you that Gavin Henson is not a public schoolboy. Neither are most of the Welsh boys. Gobby and full of himself - yes - the David Beckham of RU. If only he could have concentrated on his career. I wondered what Bath were up to when they signed him, they have enough problems as it is without bringing in his disruptive influence.

If we were just talking young gym freaks then I know a fair few who aren't handy and are complete melts to be fair but look the part, but I just don't think you can say that rugby players are fannies because they went to school..

A lot of these guys become battle hardy due to the demands of the sport, whereas gym boys just pump a few weights and look in front of the mirror...

    That's just my general observation

Your average normal guy is more a footballer until the massive fame than a public schoolboy and we see who is rolling around on the floor when there heel has been skinned and who will play on with broken arms and collarbones etc..
It won't e the average guy off the street footballer..

    * comparison but it makes sense...

Fair enough you know some but Scotland are * at rugby anyway and are usually fighting out the wooden spoon with the ities

Had he kept his head down he could have been one of the greats. As it turns out he is just a *. Danny Cipriani seems to be going down the same path which is a shame

Nowhere near the wooden spoon this year mate - closely fought competition between France & Ireland.

I'm a huge fan of rugby - prefer it to football.

Scotland didn't adapt to the professional era well. We were on a roll before it (reigning 5 nations champion you know :icon_mrgreen:). The 90s was a good decade for us.

Problem is that we don't have many good working class lads playing the game and the other countries didn't have that problem.

This year could have been even better for us, I thought we were superior to Wales but the referee had leek tinted glasses on at the scrum that day and somehow thought that we were always in the wrong that day & the sheepsh@ggers were always in the right.

Anyway enough thread diversion - Gavin Henson is a tw@ and anyone who signs him is looking for trouble.

I do like watching Scotland, only been to one game years ago must have been a Celtic game the day before or something we played Romania in a friendly at hampden and beat them 70 odd nothing :smiley-laughing002:

That must have been the good old days :icon_mrgreen:,nah Romania were like a pub team...

Yeah I missed or wasn't interested in rugby when we were half decent but the signs of a decent side are coming back...

Weird how the working class aren't into playing rugby but the private schools types are,I know schools don't really play rugby and that has a big thing to do with it but you'd think there would be a few working class who make the grade..

Yeah he's a * and that video was funny to see him walking up giving it then 2 seconds later snoring

Aye, I remember that match - moved to Hampden to try and reach out to the wider audience.

Romania had a decent team in * times, probably top 12 team in their day. I've reffed them at 10-a-side level. They were pretty fast but not too technical - their pack got mauled regularly. Tier 2 side these days and going backwards which is a shame because the sport needs to expand worldwide.

BTW - I live in the south of England & there are plenty of working class lads (& lassies) play rugby down here. Wee bit of a shame because Glasgow Warriors seem to be doing themselves justice these days to tiny crowds. I'd love to be in a position to watch them regularly. Have to settle for Bath instead.

While it is true a lot of 'posh' schools play rugby, there are parts of the UK where it is also a working class sport, like here in the west country.
My own club (Dings Crusaders) play in the 4th tier of national rugby and trust me they are far from posh! Our big rivals are Clifton, who are the archetypal posh boys, and you may well be shocked at some of the goings on at and after games.

    Really?

Aside from Limerick and South Wales, where else in the Northern Hemisphere do you find much working class participation in Rugby?

Sorry pal, wasn't ignoring you. Was trying to cook & type 1 fingered at the same time.

I don't know if I came across wrong, not trying to turn this into a class issue. More about the player numbers and Scotland have a minute player base compared to all the other NH tier 1 countries - including Italy.

But to answer your question - a couple of other posters have mentioned the West Country in England - Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, Somerset. The fact that there's no football teams of note down there should tell you that. Also borders is the traditional heartlands of Scottish rugby - teams are full of farm labourers. Sad thing is that they don't even have a pro team now.

My team have plenty of working class lads in it, roof tilers, brickies, etc. Just normal people playing rugby. I could go on forever but that's for a different thread on another day.
