Strong rumour is he is to be announced as new Derry City manager tomorrow. Peoples opinions on him?

Part of the criteria was the youth development of the club, any info on this part of his skills?

    Cheers

Not sure if Willie is suited to management as the #1 but certainly with youth teams he has had nothing but excellent reviews. If Derry's ambition is to develop their youth set up then Willie could well be the man to take them forward.

If he gets the job it'll be interesting to see how how he gets on.

He did tremendously well with the youth & development side of things when he was here. I remember he went to manage a Hungarian club (I think it was), but things quickly went south when that club hit financial straits, so he wasn't there long. I've no idea about any other senior appointments he has had.

Big part of the criteria was he had to bring on our Youth set-up, so it seems he has got the nod because of this

He's more of a coach, who trains the players well and builds confidence and nurtures players than a manager. He should really be an assistant manager or youth team manager.

Done really well here, he really helped to lay the foundations for the youth team set up that went on to dominate the Scottish game and still do to this day.

I fully expected him to make the step up to first team coach but then he got farmed out to Upjest and it went south from there.

I really hope he does well, the McStays' are woven into the fabric of the club.

Hope he does well in progressing his career with Derry City.

He was a great servant to Celtic and a sound guy too. :shamrock:

I really admired his record as boss of our youth set up, and was really surprised Lenny never kept him on board when he was appointed. Someone remind me was a rumble between Lenny & Wullie McStay, or was it with Mogga, or am I wrong ?

    Nothing confirmed until tomorrow mate.

Quite a few in for it, including Jim Magillton, McStay and Sean O'Connor ex Sligo Rovers manager among a few others.

Willie Mc Stay about to be announced as Derry City manager, is this a good appointment, any thoughts?

If one of the main criteria is youth development - as indeed it should be at City - then he is a first rate appointment. His Celtic youth team was a huge success, and dominated the Scottish scene for the best part of a decade. Our first team is still enjoying the benefits of that.

One thing though - he is not a manager who will go in like a whirlwind and turn things round. He is the guy who will put in firm foundations and grow things over several seasons. So he has to be given time. If the club regard it as a work-in-progress then I think he will be a very sound appointment.
