Nothing like cram revision....Cue cards help.

Or make notes while watching documentaries.

    Bump.

Does anyone have any experience in applying for a Masters? Bit stumped with it all, am I supposed to provide letters from my references or will the uni chase them up? Any tips in general, such as what to write in the personal statement, would be greatly appreciated.

Yes i do, i have been accepted to a masters course at the same university as the one i did my undergraduate in.

For me the university got the two references which were both aberdeen uni lecturers/senior lecturers. My advice would be to email the postgrad department at the uni you are applying to and ask if you need to get written ones or whether they will email them for you.

For personal statement its much like your undergrad one just try to impress them and get as much out of your accomplishments without lying.

I think it also helps if your postgrad is linked to your undergrad, e.g. i did economics now doing petroleum economics so i was able to explain the link between them and show why i wanted to do that particular course, also seeing as i am in Aberdeen, Oil capital of Europe and all its an easy sell.

    Cheers.

I was planning to email anyway to find out more about the course, I figured doing that won't do any harm. I can't remember anything about my undergrad ps, pretty sure most of it was bullshit.

My undergrad and the postgrad aren't directly linked in that they aren't the same subject, however there are overlaps in certain modules so I've wrote about how this links them together. I reckon I should be ok.

From memory if you get a 2.1 or above in your undergrad then you are a shoe in if you are studying at the same uni. Unless you are applying for a premium course at a premium uni, you are a sure thing. They want your money!

Going to a different uni to study it. It's Broadcast Journalism at UWS I'm applying for. Done my undergrad in History and Politics at Strathy. Their are no strict entry requirements they just want an honours degree, so I think I should get in ok. There's not really a similar course at any uni in Glasgow though, and from what I read the employment record for the course is excellent which makes me think their may be a lot of applicants, so I really want to make sure I nail the application.

You will be fine. Without sounding cynical, it is all about cash and unis make a lot from post-grads. And no offence intended but isnt a masters in broadcast journalism a step backwards from a history and politics undergrad? What do you need it for that you cant do now?

I only got a 2:2 in my undergrad, missed out on a 2:1 by 1.5% basically due to a horrible performance in one exam, so I feel personally that a masters will be beneficial to me. Journalism was also something I'd thought about at undergraduate level, but decided to do History & Politics because I thought I wanted to teach. I'm mainly doing it for the job prospects after it, the uni claim it has a high employment record with most graduates from the course working for the BBC, STV, SFA or Scottish radio stations. Had a bit of a look about though and I've decided to apply for another Journalism course at Strathy, so I'll wait and see what happens.

Ill have you know my course was quite competitive to get into! :86:

No seriously it was, i am surprised i even got in, only 35 places and i was told well over 100 applicants. And according to my advisor most of them had 1sts something i don't have.
