    hey all

been on another celtic forum and the majority of their members, thought my suggestion that celtic was only a football club and nothing more was absurd. they wanted to sing the irish national anthem in gaelic at the games, and i commented that you should not sing it and stick to football songs. i am a nationalist but i like to keep my political beliefs out of the game. why do so many fans like to add theirs into a sport? and what is your opinion on keeping the traditions of celtic?

my opinion is pretty simple, i sing irish rebel songs on the bus going to the games and in other places but i wouldnt sing these songs at celtic games because they could get celtic into trouble. Why would anyone want to sing add ons like IRA when they know full well that they are representing their club and in this day and age they celtic could be punished. But i think its a bit harsh on other other side of it that if you get caught up in the moment and one slip of the tongue could leave you banned for life...thats a bit harsh i think.

Scottish Football club...the IRA has * all to do with it.

Irish roots, which should be sung about but no IRA songs, which are nothing to do with it. Why should we sing songs by a bunch of terrorists? What has that got to do with our club? We have every right to sing Celtic songs, Scottish national anthem, Irish songs, but I think the Irish national anthem is a bit much, we are a Scottish club so we can sing our national anthem and Irish songs like Fields of Athenry should be allowed as they are about our roots, but the Irish national anthem is too much I think, although it wouldnt be as bad as singing * IRA songs.

thought it was accepted by all that Celtic like Barcelona.St Pauli and mebbe 1 or 2 others are more than a football club. They are representative of a community that has not been always welcome in their respective countries to (paraphrase Xavi i think).A club with a strong charitable ethos. Also a traditionally left-wing support.

Does politics have to mean support of a group like the IRA,ETA etc no obviously it doesn't.
You choose to keep your beliefs out of it,that's up to you but to some people Celtic is more to them than just a footy match on a Sat/Sun afternoon.

Isn't that the Ikurrina as your avatar btw?Or do ye mean just keep your politics out of Celtic Pk

Celtic were here long before the modern IRA and will be here long after! I think the reason most of the songs were sung was because of the Irish connection obviously and peoples' support of the armed struggle at the time and so on. We cannot deny our history or maybe even the history of some supporters but we have to do the neccessary if it means moving with the times.

Celtic are a Scottish football club which is proud of it's Irish links.

Celtic has always been more than a football club. Part of that extra quality of Celtic has been the social dimension linked to the reasons Brother Walfrid founded Celtic back in the 1880s.
Celtic Football Club has changed a great deal in recent years. The ownership of the Club has been transformed from few to many. The finances of the Club have been placed on a sound and solid basis. Celtic Park, while remaining on the site of past triumphs, has developed beyond recognition.
Celtic will continue to change in order to meet the aspirations of its fans and to live up to the principles behind Brother Walfrid’s reasons for founding the Club. This will be carried out within a sound business plan ensuring development of the football set up and continued improvement for Celtic Park.
Jock Stein always sought to impress upon the fans the importance of the founding principles of the Club and the need for the fans to live up to those principles.
High expectations of management, players and supporters continues to be the norm at Celtic Park and the Social Charter aims to set out the best that Celtic stands for.
    Celtic Social Charter
Celtic Football Club, from the supporters to the management and owners, welcome the statement of intent in its Social Charter to set out the values and actions that are part of the best that Celtic stands for
