Anyone over about 35 should remember him and his really uplifting commentaries on Radio Scotland. From a Celtic point of view he commentated at Lisbon in 67 and through our 9 in a row. Was the commentator on Radio Scotland to 1983. RIP David.

RIP! Broadcasting legend. I met him on a few occasions and during the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Dundee Utd, he had to hand over to me when I was doing an on field commentary for a pre match childrens football event that I was involved in. He had handed me a script that had been 'passed' by Jim Farry for me to read out and I ignored it and went on to talk over the tannoy about the kids taking part, saying which team they supported and their favourite players. Lets just say that there were a lot of the youngsters who were Celtic supporters that day and there was a lot of booing!!
DF spoke to me afterwards and told me that Jim Farry would not be happy but he had found it funny. Sure enough, I got my knuckles rapped from JF! Happy memories of DF!

    RIP

Two great Scottish commentators gone in within 18 months of each other. Rugby's Bill McLaren and now David Francey.

The games in heaven will be better to listen to now :)

Yeah he was absolutely animated in every game like it was the CL final. Never been replaced IMO. All the present commentators sound the same but you couldnt mistake Francey. I heard he used to have a hip flask at the games which probably helped! I also heard he was hit in the face with the ball while commenting and just went 'oh dear oh dear, I have just been hit square in the face with the match ball...anyway the ball goes down to left flank...'. He had a really distinct voice and turn of phrase and was much impresonated. Apparently noone knew his face because he was just the voice and once he went in for a David Francey impersonation competition and came in 3rd!

Bob Crampsey was a loss too. A one-off. Apparently he was a tim.

Wasn't he the guy who once asked John Greig, on air during a game, after the Huns had lost a goal,

"What are WE going to do now, John ?"..............

    R.I.P Mr. Francey.

Brilliant! I'm 41 and grew up on listening to him. R.I.P.
Couldn't care less which side he was on as like Murray Walker with F1 he could make something boring, sound exciting and I never picked up really obvious bias but I think the comment he was a tim was referring to Bob Crampsey and if David Francey was appointed by the bbc's peter Thompson (which he was) it is 100% certain that he did not come from a Celtic background, so the the John Greig antcedote sounds spot on.
Overall a top top commentator.Like someone like Arthur Montford, you knew they weren't tims but they didn't go on with wee nasty digs at Celtic like they do now with people like Roddy 'rangers' forsyth, who living in england i have to endure on bbc 5 live.
