Got a new laptop a couple of days ago after my other one broke, but I still want the files that were saved on the hard drive.

Is there anyway of accessing these files, by removing the hard drive in the broken laptop and doing something with it? I know you can buy an external caddy or some sort of usb that can get the files, but is there some sort of a 'quick' fix?

I have seen some advice about putting it in a desktop (PC) computer, but I don't fully understand how I would do this, I have a PC, so if anyone can tell me how to do something like this it would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

Just plug your monitor cable from your tower into the Laptop and its working as normal ,take off all the files you want and transfer them to the Lappy.

Think he means opening the tower and attaching it as a slave drive, dont know if it would need a certain ribbon cable for this :50:

No he means look at the screen. look behind it, take the cable that goes from the screen to the pc, remove that and plug it in to your laptop, if it works then transfer the files to the pc. If it works then you're laughing, if not it's a take the hard drive out the laptop and connect to another pc.

Tbh I dnt hav a clue wat I'm talking about I'm really not that good with complicated things with IT lol

I have seen something about a slave drive and that's wat I was trying to explain, I think haha I think it's a motherboard failure, my screen ain't turning on but the laptop still runs, would plugging in my monitor cable work by any chance? lol

    Cheers for the advice

If you can get yourself to a pc world, im sure they will stock a caddy that will do what you want. You'll pay more than ordering it online though so depends how important the file(s) are.

If your going to do that, could be worth a quick phone call to check they have it.

You get them off e-bay for £3, make sure it 2.5", 3.5" is for desktops only. Taking the disk out the laptop is normally very easy but you will need very small screwdrivers, jewels are the best out the pound shop.

Nah, they are not that important any more, I just typed out what I needed again last night, will probably just get one off amazon/ebay. :50:

Hitachi Travelstar 5K320 320GB, is the hard drive in the lappy, think its 2.5"?

D'you think that will be o.k?

Yup 100% it's 2.5", 99% it's sata as it would need to be a old laptop for ide. Might as well take the disk out to be sure. All laptops are different but try underside of laptop you should see it with a few screws, very small watch not to thread them, need the right screwdriver. It will be about the size of the cradle. If you have problems post the make and model, I will talk you through it.

Yea, its definitely SATA, I have taken the hard drive out and there is like a metal case on the hard drive disk, I'm guessing this is the bit that will be a bit awkward with the tiny screws?

Thats what it looks like just now, so I just take that out the metal thing and then when I get the caddy just slot it in there?

Cheers for the help mate :50:
