OK maybe not over-looked, probably alot of Celtic fans aren't aware it was ever said because I cant find anything about it on the net or youtube. Its not mentioned in the thread "what the greats say about Celtic" on this site either.

There was a VHS video I used to own called "The official History of Celtic Football Club". It was released in 1988 just after we won the double in the centenary season, unfortunately I dont have it anymore.

In the opening few minutes there is a short interview with Bill Shankly, I think at the Liverpool training gound, where Shankly says "Celtic Football Club is the most successful club in the world, no one can deny that". I was only a wee boy when I seen it but I remember it well.

He obviously didnt mean that Celtic have won more trophies or European cups than anyone else. He was refering to the fact that Celtic rose out of an extremely derprived area of Glasgow that suffered extreme hardship and became one of the most well supported clubs, famous throughout the world. Celtic went from virtually nothing to European Cup winners, that was the success story he was talking about.

I have seen short clips from that video on youtube but none of Bill Shankly saying this. Does anyone own that video? and if you do find that Bill Shankly clip, post it on here and on youtube. Its a quote from a great Scottish manager that deserves to be out there.

here is a link to a picture of the video Im talking about:50:

No. Shankly was the only British manager present when we won the big one. He said to Jock, John Your Immortal, he was right.

I have the video your talking about and if memory serves i'd say you were spot on about the quote.Shankly and Stein were great friends(coming from the same stock)Like Jock he was not raised a Celtic fan but this did not stop a young Shankly from going to watch Celtic on many occasions. He never saw religion as anything to do with football and would have had no qualms about making such a quote even if it might upset some not so enlightend souls from his motherland.A favourite of mine is when he tells Emyln Hughes that the reason he still joins in with training at Liverpool even though he is getting on is "when i die i want to be the fittest man in heaven".
Like Big Jock a true LEGEND and not a Knighthood between them.

I have the video. The quote from Shankley was in the early 70's when he managed Liverpool. Probably a reasonably factual quote at the time!

Someones got that video on dvd/cd because I've seen clips of it on youtube but not the part with Shankly. They must have converted it to cd/dvd because it's only available to buy on VHS video tape. That Shankly quote should be on the net. If you've got the VHS tape and know how to convert it so you can put it on the net, do it!

Or even better if you've got that video on your hard drive or in dvd/cd format post the clip of the Shankly quote on here and on youtube.

Actually had that quote as my signature when I first joined the forum, but when you see it in black in white all the time, unfortunatley it doesn't ring true as to where we are as a club at the moment.

Also remember the video well, and how they really talked up the Mark McGhee signing when in reality the huns were spending very big and by the end of 89 we could see the worse period in our history on the horizon.

Sorry for the doom and gloom the whole video seemed quite
amateurish even then, which was a good guide as to how the club was going to be run in this period.:shamrock:
