From a BBC reporter who was at Hampden on Saturday:-

In response to all the tweets re sectarian singing - I didn't hear any from where I was at Hampden yesterday.

For years they ignore thousands upon thousands of people chanting about being up to their knees in * blood. I've watched many a Rangers game on the BBC and had to endure ninety minutes of sectarian chants and nothing has ever been said during a live broadcast. That's something which I don't think they have ever done and for them to point the finger at Celtic fans at a time where the other half of Glasgow have had their name tarnished and the media are keen to even it out says it all.. When in fact the songs were the Irish national anthem and The Boys Of The Old Brigade, whom the queen honoured recently and has now apparently commited a sectarian act by laying a wreath.

people need to recognise what is viewed as sectarian thats where the problem lies, for me Nevin was well within his rights to bring it up at half time and tbh i hope more people do. Its an embarrassment to the club now as soon as people relise this and stop living in 1970 the better if you want to make a political speech go to a political rally leave football stadiums for um yes thats right football.

Wow wot a thread. Anyway my contribution.....I don't know if this has already been pointed out but did not their Queen lay a wreath in respect to those who died in the War of Independence? Is The Boys of the Old Brigade not a song referring to those self same soldiers? Seems to me that their Queen has no problem commemorating the boys of the old brigade, so they shouldn't either.

I've been delighted with the way Celtic have challenged things this season, our whole attitude is night and day from even just a few seasons ago. The Club are finally on the same wavelength as the support.

Nevin didn`t bring the subject up it was Maclean and was most likely a programme producer that gave Maclean the go ahead. The whole thing reeked of a set up as soon as it happened ,right down to Nevins` obviously pre-prepared response to Maclean.None of the others on the panel were asked for their opinions on what was being claimed.

As for your assertion`s all I can take from them is that you feel BOTOB and The Soldier`s Song and some of the other pro-Irish history songs sung at Hampden on Saturday are of a sectarian nature.

All i can say to you is that people do not have to realise what is viewed as sectarian thay need to realise what is sectarian and you sir obviously do not.

Well done to Celtic for standing up to bbc Scotland and challenging them on this. I have been very proud of the way our club has stood up for itself this season. No more should we ever have to put up with the anti Celtic agenda of some in the meida and SFA never mind the anti Irish racist tinge to much of it as well.

I have been reading this thread on and off all day and i have to say it is certainly thought provoking. I have said for a while on here that i don't really favour songs that mention the IRA at the games as i don't think they are relevant or appropriate. That doesn't mean i think they are wrong or immoral. Far from it. What i do take issue with though, as it seems most of the Celtic support have, and that is them being referred to as "Sectarian". Nothing could be further from the truth and this should certainly be challenged. I have come to question my own views on the whole "IRA Songs" issue though and that is why i have found this thread so thought provoking. On the one hand, i personally feel that songs like the fields of athenry, let the people sing etc and all Celtic football songs are quite rightly sung and played at the games and i have always felt that IRA songs have no place at the games because they have no relevance to the football as such. I suppose, though, it could be argued that the Fields and Let the people sing have no relevance to the Football as such but certainly have relevance to the roots of our club hence why i am questioning my own view of the singing of the likes of the BOTOB. For example, the flower of scotland could be considered offensive to some but as it is not a sectarian song, no one would dare ask for it's removal from the tartan army's song sheet.
I think i still personally feel that singing about the IRA should be avoided but i certainly don't feel that way about all Republican songs. Republican songs certainly have a relevance to our Club and history and if we bow down and allow people to label them sectarian, what will they go after next and label as sectarian or offensive? The Tricolour? The Fields of Athenry? It also worries me that a lot of people, and some i know personally, actually hold the view that the "Soldier's song" is sectarian.

It's certainly a hard one but i am glad the club are taking issue with the "sectarian" labelling of these songs. Although they may be offensive to some, they are certainly not Sectarian and we shouldn't allow them to be labelled as such in an attempt to tarnish our name.

I'm finding it challenging to really get a grip on where i stand with this.

I know i'm not comfortable with the "ooh ahh up the ra" at the games, but the ones being dabated are a completely different kettle of fish.

Should be interesting to see what the BBC's response to this is.
