Hi ghuys, not sure if this is a thread somewhere else but I couldnt see it.

Was watching Alan Sugar assess EPL finances on BBC2 last night and he made metion of a new UEFA rule that all clubs playing in the CL next season will have their books scrutinsed and must "Break Even". First time I've heard of this.

Anyone got any info as, from my limited understanding, the consequences could be...interesting :97:

Programme was very good last night. Sugar was harsh with some of his comments though.

Is this the thing that clubs can only spend as much as they earn?

Still not sure how La Liga teams are going to qualify for CL when this rule begins. They must spend more than they earn every season. If they were "breaking even" than how are both teams in so much debt.

Delighted with this rule coming into place. We have a relatively high revenue, we can start competing again.

Surely this rule will only increase the gap between the big and small clubs?

I don't think so, it'll push the wages and transfers down. Smaller clubs can start competing again instead of having to spend around £8m for an average player.

yeh this will create a more-level playing field to a certain extent. no more chelsea + man citys spending ridiculous amounts.

I also imagine there will be some exclusions (such as City and Chelsea) in the very first season that this comes into effect, which would only boost our CL prospects

And it will drag it towards the way football used to be, the Milans, Reals and Man Utd will still rule world football but it will be much less securely. Clubs need to stand on there own two feet. No man is bigger than a collective football club or else they shouldn't be.

Right now Abromivich is bigger than Chelsea and the Shieks bigger than Man City, they are in very precarious positions. Don't even get me started on the Glazers at Man Utd.
