Our central defenders have took a massive amount of criticism this season.

However, I believe a massive problem has been our tactics and the way we have set up. Central defenders like Hooiveld and Majstorovic have came to the club, with very decent CV's and have been made to look like amateurs at times this season.

Our RB and LB have been leaving our centre backs exposed all season and this has forced our central defenders to cover the wide positions countless times this season and to that's causing mistakes. Our central defenders shouldn't have to be marking a threatening striker and be worrying about the massive gaps left by our full-back's at the same time.

To be frank, our central defenders haven't had nearly enough protection, from our full-back's or from our midfielder's. Despite this, our defence has the best record in the league, having played two extra games than our closest rivals.

There has been a couple of individual mistakes but the majority of our mistakes have came through setting up wrongly in my opinion. I think our tactics have been way off and I hope after drawing and losing previous games, along with winning with a balanced approach today - has taught our management team some very valuable lessons.

I don't think our central defenders are as bad as people have made out, including myself. That begs the question, do you think our central defenders still lack quality or is a lot of our results down to naive tactics?

Edit: I never noticed a central defender thread that was closed by staff, would just like to say that this thread is about our tactics throughout the whole season so far and not just about our tactics in today's derby. Sorry if you feel this thread should have been in the post match thread.

Your right, rogne is too young to be consistent so we have to expect mistakes from him, maj has a decent number of caps for sweeden so clearly he is no mug and wouldn't have been recommended by Johan if he was crap. Maybe they just need someone like kayal or brown sitting just infront of them when the full backs go forward

Our defence looked like the best in Britain, nothing got passed them today and that for me was because of the way we set up with Kayal picking the ball up whenever the defence got it out of the box instead of it going to another hun.

Brilliant defensive display today and hopefully the defence can keep performing that way on a consistent basis. Kayal also helped us keep a clean sheet today, he was fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the next few weeks

Agree, Our defence has been really poor because the full backs have left them exposed with no cover. But with Kayal sitting in right in front of them, i think we could be onto a winner there. Rogne looks a good prospect and Maj hasnt done much wrong tbh.

Hopefully this is just the beginning for us now.

    hail hail :)

TAB -93 couldn't agree more mate , and i've said so in various other threads. It was obvious today that the Huns just kept booting the ball up to Misser because they couldn't play down the sides of us. Also Kayal was prepared to do the dirty work in the middle today.

confidence plays a hughe part and with press and punters layin into them constantly that is gonna hurt them, however they have to block that out and believe in themselves and they took a big step today.

In terms of how to defend no as was proven today. However aren`t the greatest when in possession of the ball, but we have others to do this so not that big an issue as long as they defend correctly.

i think the huns played right into our hands today, not to take away from us though. they just kept humping the long ball to misser and then our two demolition balls at the back(rogne and maj) would win the header against him all day long! and then whenever they tried to play it along the ground, the man of the match for me, kayal would just win the ball

so yes much better from the defence but i do think the scums tactics suited our tactics perfectly

since the season started ive always thought our defence isnt as bad as everyone makes out yes granted it could with being bolstered i think me could do with a better strikeforce as they say the best form of defence is a good attack, today proved that Rogne is good enough to cut the mustard he absolutly BOSSED! the 18 yeard box he is young and has much to learn but give him feild time and he'll learn that fast enough. Maj gets hammered in the forum but tbh i think he does his job well i think he lacks confidence atm but again that will come.

The biggest place we have failed this year isnt defence its was a settled midfield this is due to injurys and call ups im prity positive Ki, Kayal, Ledley can work a treat for us we need accomplished strikers that are capable.

The celtic team isnt as bad off as everyone makes out to be. A few quality signings in jan then party time at the end of the season. :D

A lot of credit has to go to guys in Midfield aswell when defending ,they made rangers play the long balls and they harried them into making a lot of mistakes and missed passes but the Central Defenders looked at ease today ,im not saying there brilliant after one game but if Lennon sets his teams out like that in most games with the Midfield blocking the gaps through to the Centre Halfs he is on to something.

No. They just require sufficient protection from the FB-s and the midfield, and a smart team setup.:50:

I have no complaints about our defence after today because they were solid when it mattered, looks like lenny could have resolved the problems we've been having recently :50:

i think our centre halfes wer solid today smashing everything winning most of the headers but when they get ball too feet i think they panic a bit too much and pass it out the pitch other than tht i think theyr basic strong defenders.

i think were our own biggest critics majstrovic came out and defended him self and said they have conceded the least goals in scotland yet our defence has the most flak hes an immence player as is rogne who can only improve under johan and daniel

Never seen the 1st half today but have watched it since ,The 2 of them were under pressure for about 15-20mins and they came through it with flying colours ,someone said thats 3 clean sheets in a row so thats a positive and means that Dan and Rogne must be hitting it off by playing more games together .

It needs to be a settled partnership in there and the only way that'll happen is by playing together every week ,its looking better lets say but the Transfer Window is open so Lennon might have his own idea's.

I thought both if them were outstanding today, especially Rogne. Never gave Miller a sniff, and considering the form he's in, and they were at home, then I think that the central defenders can hold their heads high tonight.

I actually started to think Maj and Rogne were bonding a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps we are too impatient although it was starting to look terminal until a couple of games ago. It is also probably no coincidence that we stop shipping goals when Brown and Kayal returned. We were just playing too open too much of the time and lacked fit DMs. I think now we should establish a settled lineup for the next couple of months based on this:

    ..................Forster

    Wilson..........Rogne....Maj.....Iz

    Forrest.........Brown....Kayal......Ledley

That would be a very solid base. I doubt we would ship may goals.
