true, if we restrict the songs we sign to hail hail etc our away support will be as dead as at home games and we'll lose our reputation as fans and tbh i dont mind if were viewed as bigotted as long as were passionate and it stays in the stands, we sould sing all our songs loud and proud regardless.

btw im not one of these scottish guys that supports ireland instead, id love celtic to promote their scottish identity more to (mayb anti english songs from a scottish perspective lol :84: - i kno we hav english supporters )

I just feel we shouldnt be restricted ..

or else in a decade we'll b sitting shouting "go go celtic" amongst away fans with a giant foam hand in the air!

I would to thank you all for the valuable history lesson handed out on this thread, and now I'd like to reply by starting with a confession.

I am not Irish, I may have Irish ancestry but you'd probably have to go back 6 or 7 generations to find it, I am scottish. I am scottish through and through. I support a scottish football team.

I didn't start following celtic coz my family took me, in fact I'm the only person in my family who showed any interest in football. I followed celtic because I liked the way they played and I liked the fact that celtic were open to everyone regardless of religion, unlike the closed shop in govan.

Now, I'm sure some of the songs mentioned before are important to a lot of you, but it should be enough that many celtic fans like me who have no interest in dragging religious and political baggage to CP don't want to hear stuff about the ira.

Just think about that for a minute, forget what the media or sfa suits say, some of your fellow celtic fans think that these songs are totally inappropriate for a football match.

    Shouldn't that be enough?

nickyg, republicianism is basically about 32 county ireland and has NOTHING to do with Scotland or Celtic. You trying to convince anyone that it has, is a joke

I was very surprised to the Boys of the Old Brigade sung at the Aberdeen match, the last game of the season because I felt that what they were singing had nothing to do with Celtic's History. Its the same with several other songs.

There are plenty of Celtic songs to be sung that have everything to do with the history of the club, why aren't people singing them??

i think it is just sad that people are afraid to sing the fields of athenry because it may be constrewed as promoting sectarianism

Hi never been on here before (never been brave enough!) but I want to say that I agree with Dempsey. I was raised a protestant and am Celtic to the core. I love the club and can appreciate its history but I find sectarian songs disturbing. I have as much Catholic and Protestant Irish blood as anyone in Scotland and generations of my own family history are a testament to that. Most of us are a mixed bunch here and I would like to think we are a little more tolerant of each other. As I said I love Celtic and will support them until the day I die. I have no interest in religoun or politics and I personally find sectarian songs offensive.

The Fields of Athenry isnt a sectarian song, I dunno why people think that it is. When you put the IRA chants in it, yea it sectarian, but they arent the proper words to it

I like the fields of Athenry. I would say that there is far worse. IRA songs tend to make me uneasy. We can't pretend that Irish history didn't happen and there is a certain romaticism about the way our ancestors (Scottish and Irish) struggled and fought against injustice. I am fond of a few rebel songs myself! To me they are folk songs and I like that sort of thing. We have plenty of those that are purely Scottish! There's just a time and place for certain songs and it should'nt be at a football match.

Cheers Dempsey. It takes me so long to post replies. I type fast enough but I like to put some thought into what I am saying. It's a bit like stepping into a male orientated world! Trying not to offend anyone with my own very female perspective.

Equality has a direct link to Celtic, yes, not republicanism.

You cant "let it be" when Scotland is divided by religion and culture. Thats the whole problem with singing these songs.

I know that what I said seems contradictary (my spelling is awful tonight!) but let me explain. I couldn't give a toss about protestantism or catholicism as I said I am not particularly interested in religion but I find bitterness and hatred in both sides of the divide quite intimidating.

History in song is harmless until it is used to perpetuate said bitterness and hatred. I said that I quite like some songs well I do. I had an Irish granny who was fond of songs like Kevin Barry and who sang them like a lullaby!! My late father used to regale us with stories of the Irish struggles which his mother had told him. He was a protestant so you can see how I am quite neutral in my views.

I don't like to feel that I am part of this big something that catholics hate and want to hammer into the ground. Despite what you say about tolerance for all creed and colour it's quite scary to be confronted with such bitterness no matter which side it comes from. I don't like * save the queen either! It's not relevant to football! Maybe I am too idealistic but I want us all to get along!

Those song are about Ireland and its history, there is no direct connection with Celtic and its history. Do you think that we should all be making a politicial and religious statement in the stands at Celtic Park?

Y shud any1 have a problem with any of the songs being sung! If somebody is pro-oppression and thinks the British Government and British soliders have done the right thing for Ireland then they are obviously the sectarian *. Now the fans of celtic obviously know the injustice from their irish heritage and so it really shouldnt be a problem singing songs afterall your singing about people and things who seek and long for freedom and equality. And even the IRA, as sectarian as chanting about them might be, at the end of the day were their to fight for freedom and equality for the irish people!

I tell them to stop singing it and find something more appropriate to sing at a football match and thats my honest answer.

Malone I could talk to you all night and get nowhere lol. I just expressed an opinion in the best way I knew how. It's just hard to equate these types of songs with a football match. And no my father or grandmother would never have done such a thing but please remember I did say that I liked some of the songs I heard not all. As a child I was caught up in the romanticism of their stories. I realise that in reality there was a heck of a lot more to it. I don't know all of these songs of course but I am sure there were worse . I have experienced real hatred for protestants at a football match and you only have to listen to some of the numpties on this forum. It is frightening to someone like myself who isn't confrontational. I dont think that having an affection for some rebel songs and some distaste for others smacks of double standards. Surely it is all down to the wording and the context of the song being sung. On that note can I please say goodnight and once again please accept my apology if I have offended you.

What the * are you raving on about. If your going to fight for freedom and equality in ireland you dont * go over to Scotland and sing rebel songs in Celtic Park. What will that achieve??
