Mexican man on mission Efrain Juarez wants to prove he can crack it on the European stage with Celtic – after failing to cut it at Barcelona.
The Mexican inter-national is set to join up with his new Hoops team-mates in Toronto tomorrow. And manager Neil Lennon could pitch him in to make his debut in a glamour friendly against Manchester United the same night.
Celtic have shelled out over £3million to land the 22-year-old midfielder from Pumas UNAM. And they are landing a player desperate to prove he can produce the goods outwith his homeland after a failed spell at the Spanish giants as a kid.
Juarez spent two years at the Nou Camp between 2006 and 2008, but failed to play a single top-team game.
And he feels he has a point to prove after agreeing to move to Scotland, subject to a work permit being granted.
He said: “I want to show I have the ability to triumph in Europe after my experiences in Barcelona when I was younger.
“My time at Barca and in Spain was not positive and I want to forget that episode in my career.
“I know I can demonstrate my talent at the highest level and Celtic will give me that opportunity.
“I have heard many excellent things about the club and although I do not know too much about Scottish football, the chance to play in the Champions League alone is enormous for me.
“It’s an incredible dream, in fact, and one that I cherish.
“I promise to work very hard for Celtic and help them achieve the success they want.”
Juarez will be Lennon’s fourth signing since taking over as manager as he has already brought Charlie Mulgrew back to the club on a Bosman deal from Aberdeen as defensive cover, South Korea defender Cha Du-Ri and Welsh star Joe Ledley.
But he now finds himself in the market for a goalkeeper following the departure of Artur Boruc and has been linked with a swoop for former England Under-21 goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Grant, 27, could be available from Sheffield Wednesday for £1m, while Nottingham Forest defender Kelvin Wilson also remains a target.
