There was an Inside Sport special on Monday night about homosexuality in sport. The programme, which is worth a watch, showed how the world of football would be the hardest sport to come out in. They even had a guy from Cork who is out in the world of hurling, yet no Professional footballer is currently openly gay.

I was wondering if you think this is right, and that the football world should become more accepting.

P.S I am hoping that this can be discussed maturely, like Celtic fans and not Huns. :50:

Doubt the average fan is really that bothered.
As for Celtic, if you know the history and all that, class, creed or colour was no bar to wearing the hoops.
    Thats good enough for me.

The abuse players would get would be unreal. Everybody knows the rumours about Sol Campbell being gay. Imagine he signs for us ? He would get dogs abuse at Ibrox and grounds Scotland. That shouldn't be the case but you can understand why any player who is homosexual would keep it to themselves.

That is the point of the programme though, yeah the abuse would be disgusting, much like it was for black players in the early 90s, but if everyone stays hidden nothing will change.

Could not care less what sexuality players are.
But the abuse would be of a huge scale, alot of it banter, alot of it nasty.

The only player I've heard of that's openly gay is Xisco. Spanish lad, played briefly for Newcastle. And Fashanu killed himself too. Tragic.

Rumours are that Campbell, Ashley Cole, Ramos and few others are *. Don't really think they are, probably loads of bollocks.

The problem is the 'banter' - well thats how it will be covered up as. Unfortunately there would be abuse, mainly from opposing supporters, which is just downright wrong. I don't think any player needs to come out to the press if they feel uncomfortable - after all it is a private matter. It would be good if they could be accepted and not have abuse hurled at them but it probably won't happen anytime soon. I don't have a problem with gay people - thats just the way they are so i couldn't care less if any player said they were gay. So long as they keep scoring on the pitch for us then i'm happy:50:

Abuse only works to a limited extent by what is seen as being socially exceptable in a said time period.
Going by remarks at street level, Glasgow is a lot less homophobic than it once was.
Once a few people found themselves locked up in Barlinnie for absusing gay players, it is after all a hate crime, the word would quickly spread its maybe not a great idea.
There,s still a bit to go but i believe Celtic supporters in general, its the only fans i know, have came a long way from 40 years ago and thousands of us singing, " i,d rather wear a turban than a sash", at a Rangers match.

    :38:

Would anybody on here stop going to see Celtic if our star player of the future was gay.
    Doubt it very much.

I have every faith that Peter Lawwell and the staff at Celtic Park are searching high and low for the next Henrik Larsson at this very moment.
    :celt_2:

Come to think of it that is the question i hope to ask him at tonights meeting.

i don't think banter is a bad thing - a bit of humour is acceptable. The problem is so often songs which are vile is also claimed to be just banter eg. James Traynor and the rest of the Huns claiming the Famine song to be merely banter.

Guys all this about 'Celtic fans would accept it' is * bollocks. Some Celtic fans are intolerant thickos as much as any other football team fan is. Celtic fans made Monkey noises in the 80's. Fact. Why would it be different know. Muslim protesters got abused at Celtic Park before the Tel Aviv game, by racist louts. The only thing Celtic fans have in common is their love for Celtic. We dont have some shared sense of superior morality. Some of the views on this forum should prove this.

Didn't Graeme Le Saux 'come out' after he quit football?
