My son has got a virus or trojan on his pc.

I have tried to download and install avira and malawarebytes, it will download them but will not run.

I don't have a clue what to do and any help with this would be greatly appreciated....he really needs his pc for college

That sounds like the same thing Davie, it is coming up with some vista care thing, he is connnecting to the internet through some way other than IE or FF, not sure what but no matter what I do it just won't install these programs to get rid.

I'm really frigging annoyed with him, been warning him to get his pc protected but he knows better.:31:

He's only got IE but it isn't allowing him to access the net, comes up with a message saying that it is harmful to his pc and won't go any further.

If it comes to it, it will be getting factory restored, hoping someone will be able to suggest something else as that will be a last resort as he has college work on it and I don't want to do it without him agreeing....although....he'll have to agree, * all else can be done as it stands.

Cheers I will try that, probably wait until he comes in from college.

To be honest I don't want to be rooting around his pc, don't know what 19yr old boys have on it that they don't want their mum seeing :56:

You could try running the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, that way it might let you on the internet to do whatever needs doing - or you could possibly get in to save the work.

To run in safe mode, when you first boot up the computer, it should have a key to change boot options. I think you tap F8 Marie, can't be certain though, sorry. It goes quite fast but you should be able to see what key you have to press, not sure if it's the same on all computers.

When I had a Virus, this worked for me - it may be completely different for you, but I think it's worth trying.

I wont be able to check back to see if this was successful or if you're having problems (I'm in college) - hopefully someone can help you try safe mode with networking. As I said, worked for me:50:

Marie ,try this just now ,Goto Start - Acessories - System Tools- Recovery ,,take it back to the day before he got the virus ,ie if he got it yesterday goto the 19th ,,,takes 10mins tops ,if succesful download Malwarebytes from Filehippos asap ,click update first then run a full scan ,,post back.

He has system restore turned off I think :54:

I'll have a look right now

' system restore has been turned off by group policy'

then something about contacting your domain to get it turned on

Nope no password, when it boots up it goes right on to his user screen thing

He'll just need to factory restore it when he comes in

Nightmare.. these fake anti virus softwares are really tricky. They will block well known applications like malwarebytes and avira from running. What you could try is to rename the file for malwarebytes to something like explorer.bat and see if it will run.

They also deactivate system restore so that won't work either.

You can save files when doing this this but they files could be infected ,thats the downside of it ,has he backed his work up in any way ,CDs DVDs Memory Stick etc.
