Does anyone else think we should start aiming for quality not quantity in our squad?

When you think about how many players we actually have who have played in the first team it's a * of a lot. Our squad is actually very big but there is a lot of mediocre players in there. If we emptied out most of the rubbish and cut the squad size down to the low 20s range then we could possibly afford to go after better players. Instead of paying 30 players £20,000 a week.....we could pay 20 players £30,000 a week. That sort of idea.

Anyone else think we should look to move in that direction?

    He's a very smart man then :icon_mrgreen:

I just feel as though I'd rather have one really good player who earned a lot, but made a contribution to our first team, rather than have a long list of players like Mark Brown, Wilson, Flood, Mizuno, Killen, Sheridan, Hutchinson, McCourt etc etc

If you add up all the wages these guys will be earning you could pool it and use it to pay one top player. Ok you might get caught out if you get a run of injuries but I think it would be a risk worth taking. The players I've listed above make little or no contribution to our first team anyway. If they all left Celtic tomorrow I'd barely notice the difference.

OK, two first teamers, and three squad player - considering how good they are, how much money they would pull in, and how (un)settled they are at present.

    Brown, McDonald
    McManus, Flood, Fortuné

Flood, Mizuno, Killen, Scott Brown, McManus. The last two not because they are bad players but because of their sell on value matched with how much the team would miss them.Team seems to be playing better now with neither of them in it.

Dont know if its been discussed but Sol Campbell is a great shout to come in.In terms of experience and ability there is no-one else in world football we could get for a free and the other defenders would learn a * of a lot training and playing with him.Ok, he might be a *, but sure we've plenty of them already!

Hinkel, Caldwell and Naylor I would sell because I just don't like them...

    For 2 others ....

I would sell Mizuno and Flood because Ki Sung Yong is coming in, and we should reduce the number of midfielders and add better quality. Allthough I like Flood he isnt having any impact at Celtic.

If Giroud comes I would sell Killen instead of Flood/Mizuno.

But ....the only one that will generate "real" money is Hinkel....I think in the summer he was valued at 4mil and an offer of 3mil was reportedly turned down.

So if the object of selling players is to generate cash or reduce the wage bill....it would all depend on what kind of offers would come in..... at that point everyone is for sale at the right price

Here is the minimum I would accept to let current players go
(These are my valuations, not based on actual market value)
    player £mil

I agree the squad must be trimmed to add quality over quantity!!

I agree with you in general, we need to strike a balance (as you point out), we can't simply clear out everyone bar 20 players which will compete for the 17 match day squad.

One of the issues I had with WGS (who I consider was an overall success) was that by his own admission, he liked to "collect players", the quote is out there somewhere. The problem with this is that having so many players takes our (relatively low) wage bill to it's ceiling, and, without any buyers for players who are no longer making the matchday squad, it is difficult to move them on from their (relatively) comfortable contracts, especially in the current financial climate.

Players can only be sold to willing buyers, and we have to live within our means as far as the wage bill goes. For these reasons, I expect our January incomings will very much depend on our outgoings.

    All pretty useless IMO.

Scott Brown - Should still get a decent price.

Willo Flood - For anything we can get. Redundant now.

Gary Caldwell - Pre-contract, most likely. Favourite of the three defenders to go first.

Koki Mizuno - Don't need him. Take anything.

Chris Killen - Will want out anyway to make sure he goes to the World Cup.

For good measure I'd also chuck Mark Brown, Lee Naylor, Mark Wilson and Ben Hutchinson on to that list, and if we get decent offers wave bye-bye's to Shaun Maloney and Stephen McManus.
