The fact is that Rangers get £3M per season but if JJB make x amount above that, a percentage of that goes to Rangers. But the fact remains, Rangers are getting a quick fix for a manager that refused (Le Guen) to sign a 4 year deal. It isn't sound long term business and Celtic have nothing to worry about because we are in full control of our ability to genrate income unlike the Huns

Currently we are making £10M a season from merchandising, which is a 50% increase from last year, i expect that to go down next season which is contrary to what Celtic plc have said. I think alot of people have bought the Nike Celtic Strip which amounts to a big chunk of that number. I expect £7M from merchandising next year, i'll be very happy with that.

The risk with Le Guen is if he makes the wrong signings like previous managers then what will happen when he leaves after the two years to go down south?

Don't think this has been very good for Rangers in the long term, like everyone has been saying. So i am delighted! :56:

Excellent article! On Rangers finishing second, I don't think they can do it unless the win at Hearts when we win the CIS Cup Final! Wouldn't that be perfect if Hearts pretty much finish Rangers season while we win the first part of the double! :50:

spending money has left show biz dave cap in hand begging for money wot "happend to for every 50p gretna spent i'll spend a quid". Sure money can help but it has to be used wisley instead of going on a shopping sprea evey time you get paid.

They are just throwing all their eggs in one basket here. They are relying on Paul le Guen to build a successful and very expensive team. They are willing to use the money they would have earned in the next 10 years all in the next few seasons. Thats a big gamble.

Heres hoping it turns out to be another * Advocaat era, followed by years and years of cost-cutting and scrounging for 4th place in the league.

    MURRAY SELLS THE JERSEYS

    http://www.celticsupporterassoc.co.uk/murray_sells_the_jerseys.htm

    MURRAY SELLS THE JERSEYS
Imagine the headlines if multi millionaire Dermot Desmond announced the sell off of our entire retail division, ie ALL the Celtic Shops in a desperate act to attract a new manager for two seasons only and to provide him with funds.
He would be castigated as the villian of the piece and slaughtered in every newspaper in the land.
Meanwhile over at Ibrox, the smoke and mirrors expert David Murray does the same and is hailed as a hero!
In a last desperate act of a desperate man Murray has managed to sell off a profitable part of the Rangers business for an up front payment of £18 million and £3 million per year for the next 10 years. Selling the jerseys literally for a one off payment and then an annual payment WHICH IS LESS than the profit which he would have earned from the Rangers Shops shows clearly the level of desperation at Ibrox.
Instead of sticking with the facts Murray's lapdogs have actually been tripping over themselves trying to come up with the highest figure for the 10 year sell out. Depending on which arm of Murray's International Media you read the figures announced range from £60 million to £90 million!
What they don't take into account is the changes in circumstance and earning capacities both sides of the Old Firm could attract if we make the English Premiership. Imagine the lucrative deals open to us whereas Rangers have sold their soul off cheaply.
Once the initial £18 million has gone on players and to clear the debt then they will be left with NO shops which as our balance sheet shows, merchandise is a large part of our business and the expansion rather than the selling off of these shops should be Celtic's priority in the next decade.
For JJB there will be a massive downside to their business. What Celtic fan in their right mind will ever darken their door again knowing that they have aligned themselves with such a sectarian to the core organisation?
The challenge for the Celtic Shops is to take advantage of this bhoycott and foster a competitive pricing structure which will ensure that Celtic fans can ensure our money goes directly to the club by buying our strips at the many Celtic stores throughout Scotland and Ireland.
Coming to a high street near you... for Rangers Shops... read Poundstretchers!

Selling themselves well short IMO. We will make a lot more through our own merchandising if it continues to rise at the current rate.

I am still unable to work out why he has done this as the money he is getting would surely be generated form the stores already in place or were they all running at a loss. (Desperate *.)

I wish it was that easy for us all. JJB in Greenock has always been cheaper than Celtic for the new kit, and although a wont be goin there anymore thats the reason a been ma kits from there in the past.

Ogairbith, ive merged 4 threads on this subject and you started another one. You know better which annoys me.

Dermot Desmond is 5 times the businessman Murray is. That would never happen, we are investing money in these shops all over the place and we are not going to sell them. They are desperate and they have generated cash through a short term fix.

If they dont win titles with the money generated, Rangers will be in big trouble financially cos they have played all their best cards.

There's no reason for Celtic fans to boycott JJB. They simply sell Rangers merchandise. Rangers don't make anything from JJB's non-Rangers stuff, so you can safely buy whatever you want from them.

If the figures being quoted are correct then this is indeed a poor deal from Murray. £4.8m in merchandising a year is not that much, especially for a tem who want to be playing in the Champions League.

As someone else pointed out, we made £9.8m last year from merchandising, and through participation in the Champions League, I'd expect that to grow next year. It's not inconceivable that in 5 years time we'll be making £15m + per seaosn, while Rangers are stuck on £4.8m. A £10m a season difference in income is massive, and that can only benefit us. :50:

On a related note - do you think our board will respond to rangers giving Le Guen over £10m to spend by giving Strachan a decent budget to work with? In January he was talking as if he knew he'd not be getting much, but this changes things, and if we want to stay on top I think we'd need to bring in a couple of really top quality defenders.

I dont see it rising, sales are up because we changed to Nike and alot of people bought new kits, the market will be near saturation with nike strips next season. It could hold steady if the CL goes well.

GS doesnt need to spend big to get good players, he needs to take the Wenger approach and get them young. Make sure he uses our youth system too.

Do you think that our defence, even plus Caldwell, will be good enough for the Chmapion's League next season? I don't.

Also, there is alwasy room for merchandising opportunities. As someone pointed out, we have Naka, which makes us big in Japan, and we are developing a Polish following. If we're playign in the Europe we get far more TV coverage. Not to mention the sales from foreign tourists.
