I had a discussion in the pub (wherelse) with some people who said they thought beckham was overrated. In terms of media atttention towards him id have to agree but they where talking about him as a player and at united i thought he was excellent and i felt he held more than his own at madrid. If you consider he had the most assissts at united during the 98/99 season with probably one of the best teams in the history of british football as well as his contribution with free kicks you may agree he wasnt that bad. It takes vision to play the passes that he does that some so called better players have never had.

So for me as a player underrated, when it comes to media coverage he was definently overrrated...but ill leave it open to debate.

I think Beckham would have been more rated and alot more respected if it wasnt for the media attention he gets.

I have always rated him as a footballer but seeing him splattered all over the papers and magazines definitely put me off him a bit. I reckon he would be worth a place in the England World Cup squad next year.

I agree that his talent as a footballer is unfairly criticized because of his commercial exploits and his resulting overexposure by the media.

His final half season with Madrid defined him as a exceptional player that was committed to football despite those in the media and Real Madrids management questioning his motives. He nearly won them the La Liga on his own.

Fair enough guys can hardly disagree especially with the english media overrating people. I just felt with the average bloke in the street i spoke to they seem to underrate him in his day he was a very good player, sadly for him he married a stick thin popstar with no * and I understand how people can take a dislike to the media coverage towards him.

As a player he's extremely underrated in my opinion. Most people criticise him for not being able to take a man on but when you can hit your pass from anywhere on the pitch with unbelievable accuracy then there's no need for trickery. Throughout his career he has contributed with goals and many many assists, and as Dempsey said his last season in Madrid alone was enough to change his doubters mind and showed him as the class act he is.

He gets a lot of media attention but no one can claim he isn't dedicated to football, and in my opinion when he plays for England even now he still looks one of the best players on the park. For my money he should be one of the first five or six names on the squad list for South Africa.

It's easy to criticise the guy for all the attention he gets in the media and all his commercial work but at the end of the day if people were throwing money at any of us left right and centre to advertise felt pens and hair gel not one of us would turn it down, and he can't stop the red top rags from printing stuff about him.

Great player but too many hate him now for either being Man Us golden boy or all the media stuff.

He was a class act at Man Utd and Madrid
Ferguson got rid of him because he undermined him not the club. The same could be said of Japp Stam.
He is a marketing mans dream and moving to Madrid was the only logical move for him.
He apparently sold more shirts in a day than the real Ronaldo sold in 2 years.
Footballing wise he defined the use of the new ball and what could be achieved with it.
On his début for Madrid; he put two forty yard passes onto Zidane's feet and he scored a goal to boot.
Don't get me wrong, Madrid bought him to sell shirts, with the "idea" that he could play the game.
He raised the profits of the club to nearly a billion pounds (with 75% of his marketing brand) - not bad for a lad from Leytonstone.
People criticised him because he turned up at Madrid when they were on the slide and some even say the reason why they slid from grace was because of him.
It was more to do with selling Makele than buying Beckham, which also coincided with he loss of form from Raul and mother time on Zidane and Roberto Carlos.
Zidane summed it up with his quote about more gold paint on the bentley with no engine (Makele).
He has shown unbelievable character in his last season at Madrid where he was slagged by the club and the President and proved that he was undroppable at the end.
Don't forget, if he came to Celtic Park, the profile of Celtic Football Club would be enhanced 20 fold and it would be the coup of the century.
He still has a lot to offer, but you have to have the baggage (his wife) and the other baggage (media frenzy) that comes with it.
Whether or not football shirt sales with his name on would be seen is a different matter, but put it this way; the most sought after shirt in the world is Beckham, 23 LA Galaxy.
You understand now shy AC Milan want him back

To play at the highest level for clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan, not to mention being capped over a 100 times for his country, I reckon it's safe enough to say that he's a good player.

The media will always try to create a hero, only to them knock them down. That's just the way things operate down here, it helps shift papers...

Vastly under rated footballer. Still a supreme passer and crosser of a football and has a fantastic engine.

Just a shame his media persona has over shadowed the fact he is a world class talent.

i think he played his whole career in the wrong position cause he wasnt fast or that big he got played out wide. if he was italian brazilian or spanish or whoever he would have been just as good or better than xavi pirlo and all them

He never needed to beat the full back because he was able to curl the ball with exceptional accuracy like it was coming straight across the box plus the ball was arriving the box earlier to the advantage of the attack.
