Even if we don't look at the long-term benefits to the club, every player we sign is signed on the basis of how good they are - for the money. I.e. - is the player worth the combined cost of contract-buyout + yearly wages.

But if we sign someone who is going to rake in say 500K in shirt sales each year, then we are in effect getting him 2 million quid cheaper. So he is much better value as a player purchase.

    He's actually a good player!

I've seen plenty of him whilst he was down here with Charlton.

I can't see shirt sales being a major factor, although there are around a billion people in China, many are relatively poor. That being the case, I can't see official shirt sales being popular other than within the (relatively) affluent larger cities, if at all.

Aside from all that, the manager has said previously that he has been interested in the player, and I see no reason to doubt him.

    Merit it is.

Tm says he has been trailing him for 3 years thats good enough for me . Having said that the shirt sales part is a handy spin off and also gives you a foot into the country so win win

This is not just about shirt sales. If you get a fraction of the population interested in our live matches we are on to a serious winner :50:

I agree, Polstat showing the SPL backs this up. However I am unsure of T.V. deals in China due to their tight controls on the media, and western influences in general.

He is a decent player and will bring in money. Just because he's chinese doesn't mean he's not good.:97:

He's a saleable asset who was picked up on a free Transfer with the only outlay going to be his wages. Captain of his national team, which I'm sure is no mean feat and he's earned that right through merit, good footballing attitude and skill.

Personally I've never seen him kick a ball, however I could say that about most of Celtic's signing's of late. Just looking forward to seeing what he can do on the park. Merit.

I was thinking with the Carling deal about to expire and Celtic hopefully going alone for a new sponser it could be possible that a large chinese company could put forward a great deal as there would be large nationwide exposure with having the countries captain at the club and a chance for the company to reach a larger market outside europe

    thoughts?

Definitely on merit. China's Captain and a Premiership level player (albeit perhaps bottom half) - Charlton desperately clung onto him when they went down. He simply wasn't willing to drop yet another level to L1. Mowbray has admired him over the years and finally got his man. Shirt sales are a mere bonus.
