Opinions seem to be split on the UFC (MMA in general) between people who can't get enough and people who think its garbage. What are peoples opinions, and WHY?

Personally I don't like it, too much of the holding and rolling about the mat for me. I enjoy the theatrics etc of professional wrestling but don't have a lot of interest in the technical proper version seen in the UFC. Far prefer boxing, find it a lot easier to watch.

I dont mind it and i have a lot of respect for the UFC fighters, i just dont like to watch sweaty men rolling about on the floor with each other in sexual like positions.

I like it, apart from the lying on top of each other with nothing happening, but if theres a good ground grapple it can get brutal, such as submissions or knees and punches. I prefer it when they stand up and fight but its a brutal sport. I still prefer WWE, obviously i know its fake but some of the stunts are good, it would hurt a little bit jumping of ladders and stuff lol

MMA is the ultimate combat sport without a doubt. Only people who don't like it are the boxing fans who feel that vehicles like the UFC threaten their sport. If you want to see guys fighting then why would you just want to see guys who are only allowed to punch wearing big padded gloves? They are handicapped. I like the fact that if some big * knocks you down you still have the chance to get a hold of him and break his * arm :icon_mrgreen: Thats the real deal.

I love how floyd mayweather said he might have a shot at the UFC.

    He would get slaughtered.

Its a straight out fight mate over 3 5minute rounds. Some fights last the distance some last 10 secs. It is a brutal sport but man its good to watch.

Theres a japanese thing like ufc but its more brutal, i read it in nuts or zoo last week. I'l find out more about it, but i seen a pic of one guy sticking wooden spikes in another guys head :56:

Well UFC gets a name for just being two talentless goons beating crap out of each other for about five seconds, till one gets lucky enough to actually land a blow.

But actually it's a highly technical sport, whose competitors are among the most rigorously trained, physically honed and mentally disciplined sportsmen on the face of the planet.

Kidding! It's two talentless goons beating crap out of each other for about five seconds, till one gets lucky and lands. :icon_mrgreen:

    It's WWE without the jokes!

The common perception of MMA, and the question of wether it will ever really achieve mainstream respect is a bit of a paradox really.

The Japanese organistions tend to be more cosmopolitan and are produced and marketed in a way that puts more emphasis on skill, but generally fail to secure big name fighters (mainly because of Zuffa buying Pride a few year ago), and therefore don't get much coverage.

The UFC on the other hand is marketed to appeal to meatheads who just want to see a bar-room brawl. But it works and they have the best fighters in the world fighting for them (obvious exclusion of Fedor). I think the people who make the UFC are genuinely martial-arts fanatics, but realize that they must get people to watch the events, and that their style of marketing works best.

I think MMA is a beautiful sport but with the UFC as its primary vehicle people will always associate it with two drunkards slugging it out in a bar.

That said though, best thing since sliced bread. :icon_mrgreen:

It is the best thing ever. I've been watching since 2004 and can't get enough of it. The best part about it is the submission grappling part. People who think of it as "laying on top of each other" just don't understand the intricacies of that aspect of the game. I follow every event, regardless of who is on the card.

It's a completely different sport, it's like saying that Messi wouldn't be good at rugby. Doesn't matter.

What, just like the 48-year-old Ray Mercer got demolished by Tim Sylvia for about 8 seconds, before he knocked him the * out? :icon_mrgreen:
