ROBERTO MARTINEZ is poised to take on Tony Mowbray for £4million Scotland star Steven Fletcher.

New Wigan gaffer Martinez has a glowing scouting report on the Hibs hitman.

Chief Latics spy John Benson watched Fletch in four post-split games last term.

Now the Spaniard is pondering whether or not to take on Celtic boss Mowbray for the 22-year-old.

Martinez, who almost landed the Celts job, is close to sealing a £1.7m deal for Hoops target Jordi Gomez.

He had the midfielder on loan at Swansea last term and has agreed terms with La Liga side Espanyol.

Now he'll turn his attentions to a striker with Benson pushing the claims of Fletcher, despite ex-Wigan boss Steve Bruce deciding he did not want him.

Hibs chairman Rod Petrie is braced for bids for Fletcher and captain Rob Jones.

He turned down a £2m-plus Celts offer in January for the starlet but knows new Hoops boss Mowbray is likely to bid.

He worked with Fletch at Easter Road and has never hidden his admiration for the hitman.

Giant Dutchman Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is currently out of contract at Parkhead

Knew it would be a matter of minutes before this one resurfaced. Wouldnt be surprised if he was a Celtic player in the coming weeks. Another squad player

we will probably be linked with all his old players as well as the usual irish ones AND we will be up against martinez and keane as they obviously will only be interested in the same players as us

I agree, and I think Moybray is the man to bring out the best in him, I mean Scott Brown didnt look worth 4.4mill when we got him but look at him now.

Celtic fans who don't want Hibs striker Steven Fletcher anywhere near Parkhead would be forgiven for breathing a sigh of relief today following speculation Blackburn are set to swoop for the player.

According to the Daily Express, Blackburn are set to offer £4million for the 22-year-old Scotland international as they try and replace Roque Santa Cruz, who recently moved to Manchester City for £18million.

The fascination with Fletcher is a little puzzling. Previous rumours have suggested Manchester City and Real Madrid have been tracking his progress - but surely, although he's good, he's not that good...?

Reports on Sunday claimed Celtic were close to signing Fletcher, who played under Tony Mowbray at Easter Road, but the chances of a deal seem to have slipped since, with various other players being linked with a Parkhead move.

The Sunday Mail suggested Celtic could offer around £2.8million for the player - and amount that seems random enough to be true - but if Blackburn were to whack £4million on the table, they'd clearly have the upper-hand.

If, as whispers currently suggest, Peter Lawwell has agreed a £3.8million fee with Nancy for striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, Mowbray is certainly being given financial backing - though it's likely players will have to be moved on to create space within the squad.

The lad has talent, it's undeniable. He's just not a 20+ a season goalscorer, which is what we need right now. Samaras, McDonald etc just won't do it on a regular basis.

If we had, for the want of a better word, a Boyd, alongside McDonald or Samaras then we'd be laughing.

If Fletcher came in at the expense of McDonald or Samaras then I wouldn't mind so much; but I'd expect someone else to come in as a number one striker.

According to SkySports, Burnley have had a bid for Fletcher accepted and he's due in England later today to discuss terms and have a medical. Since January there has been no bid from Celtic Park. Do we assume Mowbray has his sights on other targets (not just Fortune).
