Celtic eye Henrik Larsson as No2 to Mark McGhee in managerial dream team

Telegraph Sport can confirm that McGhee is the principal back-up option but that he would be asked to become manager if Henrik Larsson agrees to become assistant manager, with Neil Lennon as first team coach.
The advantages of such an arrangement from Celtic’s point of view are that it would be less expensive than the compensation agreements that would have to be negotiated with either West Bromwich Albion or Burnley – thus freeing up a degree of cash for transfer movements – and that Larsson, who is still playing with Helsingborg, could be registered as a squad member for the hazardous Champions League qualifiers in July and August, effectively bolstering the team with a figure who remains talismanic, even at the advanced age of 37.

Another 'Henrik is going to come back and play for us again' story. Sigh. Although to be honest I think Henrik Larsson on a pogo stick would be better than some of the dross we have at the moment.

Larsson's camp deny Celtic legend is set to takeover with McGhee as managers at Parkhead | Mail Online

Henrik Larsson's agent has dismissed suggestions that the Celtic legend could make a sensational return to Parkhead as part of a new management team.

Rumours last night swept the west of Scotland claiming the Swedish superstar was set to be appointed assistant manager alongside Mark McGhee.

‘These rumours are not true at all,’ said Larsson’s long-term representative Rob Jansen. ‘Henrik is still playing for Helsingborg in Sweden and it’s impossible for him
to break his contract or be part of anything happening at Celtic right now.’

Sportsmail understands that West Brom’s Tony Mowbray still remains the front runner to succeed Gordon Strachan after meeting with Celtic in London on Wednesday.

Yet McGhee was installed as the new bookmaker’s favourite yesterday amid mounting
speculation the Motherwell boss was to be handed the job. At Fir Park, a spokesman was once again forced to deny Celtic had made an approach for the man recommended by Strachan to the Parkhead board.

Also a target for the vacant post at Aberdeen, McGhee’s agent Phil Smith was equally adamant, saying: ‘There has been no contact from anyone concerning Mark.’

The stories concerning McGhee and Larsson were triggered by a vague report in a morning broadsheet stating that Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond is poised to appoint a ‘shock’ coaching team which has never before worked together.

No names or details were added to the story. With McGhee also firm favourite for the Pittodrie post, he is certain to stall on a switch northwards until his Celtic fate becomes certain.
