I'm not a child and I think you'd put me in that bracket. My support of Celtic is deeply rooted in a 'sporting' ethos - to play the beautiful game with flair and grit.

Celtic is more than a football club Keltoi. You may have noticed the sig that someone has which quotes Tommy Burns and mentions this fact. We are a 'community' and a 'cause', although I know from your posts that this aspect of Celtic is somewhat repugnant to you. Like it or not mate getting it up the Huns is part of what we are about.

Sorry mate but this is nonsense. I don't expect a treble every year. I expect a decent quality of player, a decent quality of football and a never say die attitude. I also think you are slightly exaggerating just how little English football we (men of our age) saw as kids. I knew more English players then than I do now.

You won't be surprised that I'm not buying this either. The pro-WGS brigade tell us that MON played 'route one, brute force' football and that what we get nowadays is superior in an aesthetic sense. I find this laughable. It is very, very rare for us to turn in a performance with really good football. We are predictable, we are far too narrow and our players need far too much time on the ball to play this elusive brand of passing football.

Teams do get stuck in to us and, at times, defend in numbers against us, this has almost always been the case but it does raise a problem we have - we are not hard enough as a team. We don't have enough players who can mix it when the opposition play rough. Nor do we have enough players who are mentally hard, who will drive their team mates on.

Funnily enough I seem to remember a general consensus that the provincial teams were much more willing to have a go at the old firm nowadays - because they know they have a fair chance of turning us over - which is pretty much the opposite of what you say.

So ? Does that mean we should consign this ethos of the club to the bin ? He was also up against a high spending Rangers team while Celtic were just coming out of the board change era. You constantly cite the context in which WGS is working, you should do it here with Tommy Burns.

It was part of TB's downfall, no doubt about it. At the same time, as I say above, there were other factors - Ranger's quality, their outspending us and is coming through the most traumatic period in our history. You are right in that Jansen's side was pretty rigid but looking back both us and teh Huns staggered to the finishing line that year. Rangers were comparitively poor that year and they made the mistake of announcing that Smith would be leaving at the end of the season, which is a fatal error in my book.

There are honestly times when I wonder if you really do support Celtic Keltoi. I am sorry to say that but you seem to have a strong dislike for everything which makes our club unique.

After the Lions broke up there was always going to be a slide from that high standard they had set, other wise we'd have won 10, 11 or 12 in a row. Late 70s and early 80s we weren't bad at all but came against the new firm who both had exceptional managers. Even after Souness arrived we challenged the huns despite the huge gaps in finances, we played good stuff in teh centenery year too. Early 90s were the nadir and then obviously Tommy came in, and Fergus, and both played a role in getting us on the right track. I find your view of our recent history a bit too negative tbh.

So, let me get this right, to not be accused of gloryhunting,... fans should accept graciously that a player gets paid £20 000 per week, plays absoloutely *, but gets a game week in week out?

Please draw a line in the sand for me so i know at what point i can complain about the way celtic are playing without being a glory hunter....????
    when we lose a game....?
when we are out of europe...?
when we are out of a cup....?
when we are playing badly more often than not....?
    when we lose the league....?
Just wondering what the rules are.

Its a circa phrase that people churn out when people rightly complain after a pish performance.

I know a bunch of guys from match days who are all hardcore fans today, as they were in the miserable 90s.

Not one of them complains about the state of affairs today.

Without beating about the bush, I think people who moan (to a ridiculous extent) are either too young to remember the 90s or simply weren't big fans in the 90s.

Think your generalising too much there dude.

I remember leaping the fence with joy along with 50 or so others at a last minute John Collins winner at Brockville in the early 90's and nearly getting arrested. That goal meant we clung to 3rd position and was our first win for nearly 2 months!!

I remember the dark times mate, believe me, and will never knee-* and cry for the managers head after one defeat but rightly reserve the right to criticise after a * performance.

The flip side is I remember people complaining about the 'lack of a challenge' in the early 00's when we were gubbing everybody 5 & 6-0 every week. I personally treasured every minute of those days!

If other teams play so negatively against us then why do we concede so many goals??

obviously anyone who loves a team is going to hurt a bit when we're playing badly, but i think the main point the OP is trying to make is that it's more than winning that counts. to say that the meaning of celtic is defined only in the way the team play can't be true either, because where does that leave us? what would we have to do with the club then?

everyone has their own reasons for supporting a club, and obviously it's shallow to like one only because they win. personally, i think the history, the culture, and the fans are more important than the results, because even if we lose terribly, we still get to go to the bar, drown our sorrows with our fellow tims, and sing fields of athenry til we black out. that's what celtic means to me

That would be true if I have said that how the team plays is the only thing to define Celtic, but I haven't.

We have to remember what it is about our club that makes it supposedly special (as we all like to claim it is) and complain if we don't get that.

I take the OP as being yet another post from a fan who thinks they are better than those who are labelled negative for expressing concerns about the team. Ironically, to me, there is nothing negative about setting high standards and it is the fans who applaud mediocrity who are actually lesser supporters.

Maybe I was over-generalising Rossenspiel, but it must seem ridiculous to be complaining so heavily (as some do) about our situation now for those who followed us through the nineties?

how can you say that those who applaud mediocrity are lesser supporters? that's a non-sequitor, it could just mean they are more easily entertained. i'll still applaud mediocrity if we win, i don't think that makes me a lesser supporter.

if you're telling me that if we win the league, but play * on that last day, and you spend that night at the bar complaining about the quality of the win you're off your rocker.

Edit: sorry mates, i meant "when we win the league"

Look at the things people are complaining about tho:

    *Tactics
*Certain players playing every week despite being pish
    *Lack of transfer activity
    *The Captaincy
    *Misfiring strikers

    etc

These are subjects you will find are debated on every clubs supporters forums and in our case, I feel many of the moans and groans are valid.

Its not glory hunting, its genuine concerns about our club.

Because they have lowered the bar for Celtic. We claim to be a great club, well we can only be a great club if we aspire to certain things. If you applaud mediocrity then all your going to get is more mediocrity.

I didn't tell you that. But I am telling you that I won't allow myself to be blinded to some truths about the standard of football we play.

No one should applaud mediocrity, but ,by the same token, we must get behind our team when they need us, not just when we're winning. I remember lots of games in the 70's when we played crap, but still had the supporters backing the team. Then, in the 80's we played crap, and had a crap support, and won nothing. Is there a lesson here.

you can celebrate wins when we play like crap without lowering what you expect of your team. and even if you do, lowering the bar doesn't make you a lesser supporter. Like i said before it just makes you more easily entertained. it doesn't mean you don't want your team to have a higher standard, it just means you don't expect it, which isn't a bad thing either. in fact it makes it all the more exciting when we do hit those standards.

i don't think i worded that well, but my main point is that i don't agree that complaining about the quality of your team makes you a glory-hunter, but when there are posts like one i read last week where the guy says he's no longer watching or following or whatever as long as these results continue it's sad. that's real glory-hunting. you should still be able to watch * football, * about it, but still go back to the bar and have nothing but green and white on your mind.

Which is becoming increasingly rare. Mate there is a lot wrong with that team just now and speaking up about it in the hope that something gets done about it is a positive thing to do. Accepting it isn't, in my opinion.

    Fair comment.
