Petrov Situation

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by atodd1985, Jul 11, 2006.

  1. We all know and have read lots of threads regarding Portsmouths bid for Petrov. I just wonder whether at this point in time it is going to play to Celtics advantage.

With portsmouth still insistant on making bids for (imo) our best player, that are well below his true value and noone else making any serious enquiries, is this of any benefit to the club? If noone is interested in him now then surely that will force Stan to keep playing to the top of his abilities (shop window) so that someone will come in with the big bucks.

With Stan tied into such a long contract it makes no sense for him to play crap because he will end up playing no football at all. I for one would like to see the board stand firm on this one and not accept any snash from Harry Redknapp and Co.

    Any thoughts?

  2. 6 million should be the price, and the board shoudent budge on this no matter what.

  3. I would be happy with £4/5m but a percentage on of any sell on fee.

I think a sell on fee would work well for Celtic because I think if Stan does go to Portsmouth or another small club in the EPL it will only be to prove himself in the EPL in a hope of a move to a bigger club.

  4. Sounds about right to me.

  5. It could prob go either way. Theres always the chance the board will see a carrot dangling and grab it, but hopefully they will stand their ground and wait for the right offer.

What i'll say about Stan himself is that he claims to be happy and just in need of a new challenge but if that was the case he wouldnt be pleading with Celtic through the * newspapers to accept the first bid that comes in. Hes a lying *, he said he signed that contract so we could get money but he knows what hes worth and hes still trying to force his way out. Thats up to him but im not going to hear of anyone on here telling me hes been a great servant and we should respect his decision - if he had his way wed have got 3.5mil for him and hed be in portsmouth by now.

So, knowing that would anyone take his word for it that hes going to be 'professional' about it if he doesnt get away? I know i wouldnt. Im not worried tho, if he takes the hump id be happy to see him sit on the bench, * him.

  6. I think £4 million is a bit of an insult for a player like Petrov, he is worth a lot more than that. That said I don't know whether the board will hold out for what he is really worth.

  7. Totally agree with you, if he took the hump, put the * on the bench. I don't know if a lot of the talk in the papers is spin from his agent trying to put the feelers out to clubs that he wants to move on.

He has been a great servant to the club that cannot be in any doubt but he does have to play this one fairly. If he signed the deal for celtics benefit (which I find a bit hard to believe) then he should stick about til Celtic get the an acceptable offer and conduct himself the way a Celtic player should.

  8. Agreed. However, I would take 5 million for Petrov...finally would be able to offload him. A sell on fee might not be a bad idea, possibly 10% of next sale kind of thing. Think if he goes to the EPL, becomes Portsmouths best player and if they get relegated he might be in demand.

  9. I think Strachan is showing a "well if your not going to stump up for him, we'll play him in the CL and better clubs will bid for him at the end of next summer" attitude.

Petrov may want to leave at get into a new challenge, but as long as he's here he'll push himself, especially in the games in the CL. Because he knows he's in the shop window everytime he plays.

  10. I'm also hoping that will be the case.

  11. Yeah i cant see it happening any other way, we are firmly in the driving seat. If he plays to his potential he'll get his move next year.

  12. I would like to cash in on Petrov and use the money to fund other transfers along with the money Celtic already have.

  13. So would i but how much would you be willing to accept for him? 6 mil is the very least id take

  14. blackburn, newcastle and fulham are waiting to see what celtic accept before they make their bid for him.As for price £8 million should be the price he is sold for because you will not get a player of his ability, age and experience anywhere for less than £10 million

  15. Except maybe Jarosik!! Appiah, Martin Petrov the list goes on. Petrov ain't worth ten million.

  16. Boumsong left for EPL for 8.5million so how can somebody offer 3.5 for Petrov. Its a Joke!

  17. Based on Ferguson and Boumsong, how much would you pay for Petrov if at a EPL club? Neither set the bar high for Scottish football

  18. Well if Michael Carrick is worth £15 million and can't get into a crap England side then * knows how much Petrov is worth but we will not even get half that!

The thing is with Petrov signing that contract we can keep him as long as the contract is running.

  19. But if we leave it till his contract runs outhell probablly leave on a bosman an well get nothing
