    A good appointment

MARK FOTHERINGHAM has joined Celtic’s interim coaching staff.

The former Hoops midfielder will be part of Martin O’Neill’s backroom team at Parkhead.

Fozzy, 42, will work closely with Shaun Maloney, Gavin Strachan and Stevie Woods on the training pitch at Lennoxtown.

The new coaching team is in place after Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation as manager last night.

Fotheringham started his playing career with Celtic and made a handful of first team appearances.

He played under O’Neill with his final appearance coming in a 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock in May 2001.

Fotheringham left Celtic in 2003 and spent two years with Dundee.

He went on to play for several clubs in the UKand across Europe, including Norwich City, Freiburg, Anorthosis Famagusta and Fulham.

The former midfielder also played for several other Scottish clubs with spells at Dundee United, Livingston and Ross County.

He also had a brief stint with Fulham towards the end of his playing career where he struck up a working relationship with German boss Felix Magath.

Capped by Scotland at under-21 level, Fotheringham moved into coaching after retiring.

He took on various coaching roles in Germany, including as No2 to Magath at Hertha Berlin.

Fotheringham landed his first managerial role when he was appointed Huddersfield head coach in September 2022.

But with the Terriers in the Championshiprelegation zone, he was dismissed just over four months later.

Fotheringham most recently worked at Swansea City as an assistant under Alan Sheehan.

He left that role at the end of last season – at the same time Darren O’Dea left Celtic to become No2 at the club.

Fotheringham now makes an emotional return to Celtic after 22 years to help O’Neill.

So much for a shake up. Anyone with any connection to the club has a chance at a job under this regime.

  15. Was a bit of a calamity as Huddersfield manager, but a well-thought of coach who understands what it takes to succeed at Celtic.

If we had to lose Kennedy, this is the closest to a solid straight swap in terms of coaching pedigree that you can get.

  16. O'Neil and Maloney probably thought "who's going to train the players I hate that", "what about Mark Fotheringham, that daft * will run about stupid, high as a kite and do it and give the players a laugh and encouragement, we'll not need to do anything".

Well he’s certainly different to what we’ve had in recent years and a lot more fiery compared to Maloney, only temporary but at least we went for something a little different.
