Dissertation Help!

Discussion in 'TalkCeltic Pub' started by Norm Peterson, Feb 25, 2015.

  1. Hello Celtic fans.

Please could you take out a little bit of time and complete my brief survey on football, politics and religion? I'm a third year university student currently doing my dissertation on the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers. I find it incredibly interesting how this rivalry transcends much more than the football itself, but intrudes into politics and religion.

It would be massively appreciated if you could complete the survey, it should only take a couple of minutes.

    All the best,

    Michael G.

  2. Done. :50:

    Good luck with your diss!

  3. Done it but it's a pretty * survey tbh extremely generic questions with obvious answers for each side and this just makes us seem to sides of the coin should do more detailed questions and you will get better answers :50:

  5. Cheers to everyone that has done it so far! :50:

Yeah it's basic for a couple of reasons:

    1) It's a limited survey website!
    2) The diss work is focused on the stereotype.

For the record, I know very well Celtic fans aren't all similar in political views, which is a testament to the club!

    Cheers again! :50:

    Survey done.
    Just one thing though.

There is no rivalry between Celtic and THAT mob.
    They died.

    :56: I knew I'd get that.

Cheers for filling out the survey! :50:

  7. Fair enough but I'd probably disagree with the part regards to politics though I think the Left Wingers amongst us are the vast vast majority and I don't think anybody from the Far right would be welcome so I don't really have a problem with the political Stereotype I think what most fans including me have a problem with is the Association with Sectarianism which is virtually non existent from are side anyways best of luck with your project :50:

  9. I know most Celtic fans are definitely left wing, with Socialist tendencies. Which is annoying because I struggle to find a good enough reference to back up that in my work!

I think the sectarianism associated with both clubs is born out of ignorance by people that don't really understand the political associations with the teams, and just tar it as a religious identity, same can be seen in a certain part of Ireland today. As someone born in England, when people talk about Celtic and Rangers, it's always 'Catholic Celtic' etc. when that really isn't the case, certainly not anymore. Same with Rangers to an extent too, they aren't as 'Protestant' as they used to be, as they don't stick to their sectarian policy anymore. But I guess Rangers, from what I see are much more Protestant in identity than Celtic are Catholic. With Rangers it seems 50% religious, 50% politics. With Celtic it's overwhelmingly political. :50:

  10. Why do so many people choose Celtic V Rangers for their dissertation? I've lost count of the amount of people who have joined up on football sites to ask similar questions.

There really looks to be little substance to the questions. Sure the dissertation might not be a but vague to say the least?

I'll let other people answer the questions.

  11. Probably because it's the biggest derby in Britain, if not Europe, and anyone with a fascination for football would be inclined to find out more.

The guy said the questions were meant to be basic because the diss is on stereotypes.

  12. Thanks everyone who has done it so far. It's given some interesting results, that do not fit the stereotype (on both sides).

    - Half of everyone asked are not religious, (both Celtic and Rangers fans.) So the rivalry now isn't religious as such... Definitely political.

    - 29/30 Are neutral or favour Palestine over Israel. So to stereotype the rivalry with affiliations to the Middle East is fairly incorrect too.

    - 17/30 are related to, and/or are friends with someone on the other side and have a healthy relationship. (Bear in mind many fans are from the Republic, and as such most probably won't know any Rangers fans)

    - 3/20 Celtic fans regard themselves as British and/or English.

Just shows how stereotyped it is. Granted it's hardly a mass survey, but still.

    Cheers everyone! :50:

    Cheers Celtic fans! :shamrock: :50:

Congratulations mate. Bit late to this thread for doing the survey.

Was also gonna mention to you, you wouldn't have gone far wrong by speaking to Joe Bradley and Irene Reid at Stirling Uni for pointers/advice. My dissertations undergrad and postgrad were on identity in Scotland through media discourse. You didn't need the help it seems :50:

  16. Cheers pal. :50:

I wanted to speak to the author Bill Murray who has written a few books regarding the rivalry, never managed to find much details though. Referenced plenty of his material, mind.

I'll upload the dissertation document if anyone wants to read it?

Will do it in a few days, after it's been fully moderated. :50:
