Players we nearly, just aboot signed

It can be funny to think of players who very nearly signed and what would have happened if they did.

My biggest wonder and consideration...

We nearly signed Rivaldo after he left A.C Milan as a free agent. Rivaldo was apparently up for it. But for some reason Martin O'Neil wants him to come on trial first!!!

Brazil World Cup winner, Barcelona, AC Milan...aye nae bother we'll need to give the boy a trial to see what we're signing here.
Rivaldo says no chance he's going on trial and it doesnae happen.

Stipe Pletikosa was on trial with us.

 

Normally people wait until the season is finished and there's nothing happening in the transfer window before starting this particular thread!

 

I don’t know why but Ivan De La Pena is the one I remember. I’m sure he did come on trial as well.

Don’t remember why we didn’t sign him, but he’d have been quality for us!

 

I remember one season Strachan trialed about 6 different players in one match including Jeremie Aliadierre. I Don't think we signed any of them.

 

Ginola. Was actually at Celtic Park to sign then Newcastle contacted his agent. That was under Tommy Burns I’m sure, similar nearly happened with Andy Thom, was set to sign then agent moved the goalposts. Wee Fergus wanted to pull the plug, but a huge crowd had gathered outside to meet Thom. Burns told Fergus do you want to go out and tell them it’s off?

 

I remember talk of Alessandro Del Pierro coming at one point. But he was away playing in Australia or something and a good bit over the hill. I imagine he'd still have been a class above the mighty back lines of Motherwell and St Johnstone. But again. It came to nothing

 

The problem regarding player rumours is that if the Record/Sun throw enough * against the wall one day a bit of it will stick

 

One I was gutted about was post UEFA cup final and Hakan Yakin from Basel who was an absolutely superb attacking midfielder also for Turkey.

Felt like final piece in jigsaw but we couldn't get it done and subsequently started to reign in the MoN spending.

True, I looked it up. He was here for 2 months on loan then apparently got fed up with WgS taking the * out of him. That match i'm talking about was bizar though, i've never seen that at Celtic.

I know in hindsight, as for Forster and he done well over a number of stints for us. But I wanted Pletikosa over FF and did so for the whole of that first season.
Stand by, we should have signed him.
But can't argue with the outcome of what big Fraser done for us and have no regret over signing Forster.
