Biggest cup upset ever? Can’t think of a team as successful/big as Lyon who have lost to a team 5 divisions below them. It’s like Arsenal losing to a national league team or us losing to a highland/lowland league team

Just looked, saarbrucken knocked Bayern out but they’re division 3 so still 2 divisions higher than this French team beating Lyon. Also feel the drop off in quality isn’t as drastic in Germany due to the 3rd/4th being full with all the top flight B teams

Lyon head coach Paulo Fonseca has been hit with a 9-month ban for confronting Ligue 1 referee Benoît Millot, Ligue 1’s Disciplinary Committee has announced this Wednesday. The Portuguese manager – who just turned 52 today – is now suspended until November 30. Such a severe punishment was to be expected as Fonseca risked a minimum of 7 months out for confronting an official. His outburst occurred on Sunday in the dying minutes of Lyon’s 2-1 home win against Brest


Referee Benoît Millot was called to the on-pitch monitor to review an incident that could have handed Brest a last-minute spot-kick when Fonseca lost the plot, angrily shouting at Millot. The latter handed the former AC Milan a red card. The Portuguese head coach then went head against head with Millot and continued to vent his rage. Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso had to step in to separate the OL coach from the referee.

As per the Disciplinary Committee’s press release, Fonseca is now forbidden to gain access to Lyon’s dugout and the officials’ dressing room before, during and after an official game until November 30. What’s more, Fonseca is also forbidden to get in touch with Lyon players before and after an official game until September 15. Lyon will play FCSB on Thursday in the Europa League R016. Fonseca’s ban could be extended to international competitions should the French FA take the matter to UEFA and FIFA. Fonseca replaced the dismissed Pierre Sage on January 31.

 

It is because of Al-Khelaifi (P$G president) who hates Textor and the OL. Textor is one of the few presidents who is not subservient to Al-Khelaifi, that little * who wants to destroy Textor and OL.

Following a meeting with the DNCG, Lyon have been relegated to Ligue 2, the LFP have confirmed in an official statement. Les Gones were handed a provisional relegation during the last meeting with the French football financial body on the basis that if their financial situation didn’t improve, they would be relegated to the French second tier.



Eagle Football Group, the consortium which owns OL, have pulled multiple financial levers to try and convince the DNCG that the financial situation had drastically improved, including the sale of John Textor’s stake in Crystal Palace and Lyon’s women’s team. However, this has not satisfied the requirements needed.

This development occurs despite OL’s owner, Textor, sounding positive about the potential outcome following the meeting. He revealed to the press that the Rhône club’s financial situation had improved and that he was happy with the meeting. Speaking to the press, Textor said, “You can see from the contributions of our shareholders, we have invested new capital, not only for the DNCG, but also for our UEFA licensing process. Not to mention the good news of the sale of Crystal Palace. Our liquidity situation has improved considerably.” Lyon will now be forced to play their football in the second tier next season.

 

The peril of any club is mismanagement and whatever the rationale, Textor is culpable. Shame for Lyon, two American owners and the men & women’s football has suffered - I can only imagine how frustrated the fans must be
