Matt O'Riley

Discussion in 'Ex Players' started by Notorious, Jan 20, 2022.

  1. Brighton are a well run club and do what we do....buy good players and sellnthem at a huge profit.
I think this could be another vvd situation where top clubs didn't want to gamble and will end up paying upwards of £60million

What about Matt O’Riley and how you helped develop him as a player?

I think it's everyone's contribution and none's bigger than the player himself. I think when I came in last summer, he obviously never had the goals tally and he never had that end product to his game. I think he probably felt the trust that I'd given him to play lots of minutes and develop his game. And obviously, all the coaches do great work with him. But I think for Matt, it's been a real, real pleasure to work with him. I have to say, as a coach who's coached many players, he did everything he could to be the best player that he could be. His behaviour, his decency all the way through pre-season was absolutely a joy to see. From a young player who's got the riches of the Premier League in sight, he never lost his focus on Celtic. And even right up to the very last day, we'd finished, we had a lighter session on his last day, but he stayed out to do that extra little bit with the coaches. He has just been an absolute joy to work with. When you work with a player like that, you want them to succeed. Celtic won't be the end game for some of these players, but it's going to give them so much. And he leaves here now a winner, a better footballer and ready to play for any team in the world. When you play for Celtic and the pressure, and you become a winner, he can go on and play for most teams in the world now. His behaviour was second to none. He’s a good guy and I hope he does well. We continue because that's an opportunity now for some other players to come into here and take that on.

I'm not saying we're not. I'm saying it means nothing, in the grand scheme of football.

Well clearly it doesn’t mean nothing. Otherwise we wouldn’t have the size of fan base that we do. Our league choking us financially is what you’re really getting at.

  5. I doubt he will stroll it.
The Premier league is a big step up from playing in SPFL. He will need time to adjust.

Been a class act for us, looking forward to following his career.

  8. At the end of the day, it's not that important who is the bigger club. I mean, we all know Manchester United are a bigger club than Celtic and yet we all think Celtic are a better club than them. Certainly for those of us who don't live in Glasgow. If we didn't think that, we'd support them instead of us.

  9. The whole conversation was sparked by Brighton fans claiming to be a bigger club.

  10. They haven’t won a trophy of note in their history. I’d say that qualifies as a diddy club.

Same narrow mindedness the English ise against us.

    But you do you.

  12. No really though is it. Because when you are talking about how big a football club is, what they’ve won comes into the argument. Fact is, in their 123 year history, Brighton have won nothing. They are a very well run club who have access to big money due to playing in England. That’s doesn’t mean they aren’t a diddy club however. On what basis do you think they are a not?

The word “diddy” is just reeking of bitterness once again, as it always is when one of our top players moves to a Premier League team outwith the top 6.

They don’t have the fanbase, they don’t have the history, they don’t have the trophies.

They are exceptionally run, one of the best scouting networks in Europe, punching above their weight for a while now, a passionate fanbase albeit not a large one and there aren’t many mid table EPL clubs I’d rather O’Riley went to.

Diddy gets thrown about far too often. It’s a very good football club for someone wanting to progress and unfortunately for us thats the next stage in progression.

It’s been a joy to watch him play for us and I had long since accepted he’d be leaving. Hope he does well for Brighton. Good club and good fans.

  16. Good fans in what sense? Certainly not noise or passion. They couldn't even fill their stadium against Man United.

I'm not going to say anything about noise or passion as I didn't see the game, but the stated attendance was only around 300 off full capacity, which could be from segregation issues or even Man U fans not turning up considering thy have lost 5 of their last 6 games against Brighton.
