Mikey Johnston

Discussion in 'Ex Players' started by Keano88, May 6, 2017.

  1. I don't think anyone is expecting him to become the left sided Jinky. I'm probably in a minority that thinks he could be useful to have around...capable at times, homegrown, good squad player that can do us a turn.

Willing to accept he'll likely be away though, which I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over.

  2. The way it is the now. We should be re-calling him from his loan and putting him straight in the side. If he's scoring goals like that. But teams in the Championship in England dont park the bus. They go for it and try to win the game. Both teams usually. A lot more space. A lot more time. A lot more opportunity for wingers to play their game.

As we all know it isnt like that here

  3. Agree with that, but it doesn't mean it will never ever come off for him. Just that it wouldn't be as often. I've no doubt if he's confident he could contribute up here.

  4. Can't imagine re-calling him would do any good. He's enjoying a fresh start at a new club and he wanted the move. There might also be a clause where he can't be recalled.

  5. Leave him there and get a good fee we can reinvest. We have another year of Forrest as well for the homegrown quota.

  6. No laughing at the back.

  9. Really hoping that an English Championship team(s) go nuts and spend way over the top for him.

If we get anything above £5m, we've played a blinder.

If his form continues, we could see closer to £10m. He's really hit the ground running in a league where they spend a lot of money.

  10. I could see him going to America and tearing it up much like GG. Still not sure he's ever gonna make it with us but he's definitely got a career ahead of him.

  11. As much as i’ve always defended his ability, the Ship has sailed with us, made his debut in 2017 and had enough chances.

I think he feels the pressure of playing for the team he supports too much, doesn’t help he gets nothing but negativity from his own support mind you.

Not overly surprised to see him tearing it up down there. Does make you think though, how much can you get for him if he keeps this form up.

We ourselves wouldn’t be able to afford an in form championship player.

  12. There has never been any doubt there is a good player there for me. I think you will be proved right in that he will go on to have a good career and I include hopefully at international level as well. Given the massive overhaul that will be on the cards for us this summer we might give him one more shot in pre-season and into the first month of the season. The transfer window is open till the end of August so if its not looking good at that point we could still sell him mostly likely.

  13. Brendan Rodgers has praised ‘brilliant’ Mikey Johnston for the sparkling form he is displaying on loan at West Bromwich Albion, saying that he will sit down with the winger in the summer and discuss whether or not his future lies at Celtic.

Rodgers has been hugely impressed by what Johnston has produced for the Baggies in The Championship, with the Republic of Ireland international scoring six times in just 10 appearances.

It is a level of consistency that Johnston has struggled to replicate in a Celtic jersey throughout his career, and while Rodgers has never doubted the 24-year-old’s ability, he did suggest that perhaps the ‘different weight of shirt’ was a factor in his failure to nail down a regular place in the club’s starting XI

When asked what he had made of Johnston’s recent form at West Brom, Rodgers said: “Brilliant. I’ve said before about Mikey’s talent.

“He has been here a long time. Listen, the shirt is a different weight of shirt when you leave here. But Mikey has always shown the talent.

“He has had a number of years where he has picked up lots of injuries and he needed to get a run of games. I spoke to him in the summer when he was looking to go on loan, and I said stay and get your training right, because you’ve not had a period of training consistently never mind playing games.
He was able to do that, then he featured in some games for us, and once he trained and featured it was then about getting him game time. He has gone and done fantastic and shown the talent everyone knows he has.

“Hopefully he continues with that and then we can look at it again in the summer.

He’s 24 years of age now, he’s not a baby, he is a boy who wants to play. He has lots of talent and you’ve seen that going down into the Championship. He’s scored some fantastic goals but it’s not a surprise. You see him in training, and he has that ability.

“It’s all about the consistency and being fit and available. He’s shown that now over this part of the season and hopefully that continues until the end of the season at West Brom

  14. "The shirt is a different weight of shirt when you leave here"

Basically confirming he thinks he couldn't handle the pressure..

I don't think Rodgers should be saying things like that.

  17. Don't see any problem with it.
Basically saying less pressure down there than up here

  18. Rodgers probably doesn't mean it that way but it comes across as a put down and as a result it's a bit of a snide comment.

  19. And he is correct. The expectation appears to be too great for him. It happens, move him on.
