Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has calmed fears over the club's progress in the transfer market by insisting he could make new signings before next weekend's SPL opener against St Mirren.

The Hoops have to date signed winger Pat McCourt from Derry City in June and clinched a permanent deal for Georgios Samaras following the striker's loan from Manchester City.

But Strachan is determined to bring in more new faces, and there could be several players moving to at Parkhead before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Celtic are thought to be closing in on the signing of Barcelona youngster Marc Crosas, with the player's agent telling skysports.com that the two clubs are in talks over a possible deal.

Strachan says the club are working hard on new signings, but he refused to reveal the identity of his targets.

    Working hard

"We are trying our best to sign players at the moment. (Chief executive) Peter Lawwell is active at the moment, working very hard," said Strachan.
"From the players' point of view I'm hopeful the squad can be added to before the start of the season. If it doesn't I get on with it.

"It's unfair to talk about targets. Let's just say we are active in quite a few places."

Due respect, but Donati / Grav / Jarosik to name three who fall into that category, sadly..

That and the fact Lawell does all negotiations anyway - HE delivers while Stachan only points out folk he would like from a football stance.

its basically the players we want we cant have, we could have signed three dud strikers for around 6million if we wanted to but we are looking for players that are gonna add quality depth and strength. I don't the the point in us bulk buying the likes of Paul Robinson just to get our hopes up and be bitterly disappointed when we find out all we have is a hacking Lee Naylor.

3 dud strikers - good take the * out of the Huns, and i liked the "hacking Lee Naylor" part as well..actually quite like Robinson from what i've seen though (quite a bit last year), but i see what you mean buddy. That and the fact that Naylor could easily come onto form again (although i think his positional sense is diabolical at times).

SPending for the sake of spending's sake will be the downfall of the Hun, and it's good to see we are not falling into the same trap.

    HAIL HAIL.

totally mate, we do need to build our squad a bit but only if its worth while, as it stands there is

    Hinkel
    Wilson
Doumbe (if he is still alive)
    Naylor
    Caddis

all able to play left back, so Naylor will have to get his act in gear. perhaps he should vomit on the left flank a bit more as players are reluctant to exploit us down there when he does lol

Brilliant - esp "if he is still alive" which resulted in my lucozade exiting through a nostril with great haste (and pain).

When Hinkel first came, he was meant to be equally adept on both wings, so i'd happily see him and Wilson on the right if need be.. just as long as the Rock of Gibraltar (Caldwell) is not there - good end to last season, overall as ropey as me on a Saturday morning (which is saying something).

Haha!, trouble is, Both our Bhoys at the back are of equal Liability for us, Caldo is so up and down I tried to do a "round the world" and "walk the dog" trick with the * (thats YoYo tricks to the youngers ones among us), they need a good role model and by that I dont mean a leader but only a player that can consistently defend each week to show them a match lasts 90 minutes and not one tackle.
