    Celtic     have knocked back an approach from Udinese for defender Stephen Welsh.

    Sky Sports News understands that the Serie A club enquired about taking the 21-year-old on loan, with an option to buy.

    But Celtic are keen to keep the centre-back, who broke into the first team last season and signed a new four-year contract in April 2021.

    If he’s not going to start regularly, and the money is right, I’d sell and replace with someone who is going to play.

    Personally, I like him and think he’s a good defender, but I just don’t see him ever being our main defender, like Ajer, Jullien, Van Dijk, etc., don’t think he’s got that potential.

    I like him. Udinese's scouting has historically been extremely good so it's telling that they see something in him.

    We need to normalise not being amazed by links like this.

    If we were linked with a young Italian centre half from Udinese, we’d be extremely interested in the rumour and the Udinese fans wouldn’t be flat lining at the prospect of one of their academy products being linked for a move abroad. We’re a much, much, bigger club than Udinese…

    Disregarding all of that, this will put some well earned respect on Welsh’s name moving forward because although he still does have certain flaws he’s a good player and he is developing and getting better.

    The Italians know a good defender when they see one.

    I like Welsh. Second best center back at the club currently. We shouldn't be thinking of selling him at the mo. He has stepped in and done a job whenever we've asked him to and should be well above Starfelt in the pecking order.
