Fergal Harkin - DOF

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by Blochairnbhoy, Feb 6, 2021.

  1. Said it elsewhere but I was happy enough when he was linked, and I think he'll do an alright job, but with Tognazzi interested I'd be really dissappointed not going with him.

  2. In which case there is zero point to hiring a DoF then.

Media leaks on Harkin being approached seems like the club now going through their process of trying to go through the motions.

I don't doubt that the guy was approached months ago now.

And as someone else mentioned, what's the point in hiring a global recruitment team if it ends up just being another job for the boys with regards already connected to internal persons at Celtic park?
Money wasted there it seems, unless we really are going all out on full scale modern scouting, coaching etc.

  3. I hope any DOF is involved in the process of hiring a new manager but from the names linked such as Harkin, I just can’t see them being trusted or qualified enough to select our next manager.

Harkin’s background is predominantly recruitment, scouting and loans. I very much doubt he has any experience in hiring managers.

If he gets the gig, I’ve no doubt he will be heavily involved in the transfer side of things but it will be dictated by the manager, their style of play and what profile of player they want.

Desmond will have the final say in who the manager is and I can live with that. O’Neill and Rodgers weren’t bad choices.

  4. Can't say I know anything about him or even what hes fine for man city.
But good to see we are finally getting * done

Seems like even the club writ this season off in August

  5. He's the reason frimpong and O'Connor were bolts from no where (both sides of Manchester) last day of the window last season . Would flourish with us only if he's recruiting for the right manager

  6. Sorry, could you clarify. In what way is he the reason frimpong and O'connor were "bolts from nowhere"?

What, exactly, do you mean by "bolts from nowhere" ?

Just how is being in any way responsible for a player who has not made 1 single minutes appearance for the 1st team in 2 years in any way significant.

What attributes does he have that would see him flourish if recruiting for the "right manager"? And isn't being DOF more than just recruiting? And would he not flourish if we don't get the right manager?

If he comes in as DOF and doesn’t pick the manager then he isn’t really the DOF though.

No point trying to be modern and progressive if we do it wrong.

  7. id imagine part of the interview one of the questions would be “who would you like that is achievable to be manager and that you could work with and that would be willing to come!”

  8. I think The DOF should be someone that has experience across the football spectrum ex player, coach, manager, recruiter,
we also need to get someone who won’t undermine the team manager and works with them in this format i think the DOF and the first team coach need to be paired up as a compatible working team

they also need to have clear roles and responsibilities laid out in the interview process none of this it’s not what I signed up for crap 6 months down the line. It really needs to be a good fit or it will just be same old same old

I am also not keen on the jobs for the boys *, hiring your mates or family really doesn’t work “trust me, been there”

I like the look of Juvenile guy, so not Harkin for me possibly the Juvenile guy but I’d like a proven manager or assist manager to run the team not a newbie

  9. Fckng predicted txt I meant Juve not juvenile

  10. Celtic are closing in on the appointment of Fergal Harkin as their new director of football, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed on 12th March that the Glasgow giants had opened talks with the Man City transfer guru over taking on the key executive role as part of a major summer overhaul.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that further discussions have taken place this week and a deal for Harkin is now “90 per cent done”.

Harkin, 44, is the football partnerships manager at Premier League leaders City and his knowledge and experience built up during 11 years at the club is said to have impressed Celtic.

There is a strong conviction that the Irishman can identify and recruit top young talents from across the globe using the connections he has built up.

Celtic have employed specialists Nolan Partners to help recruit their new director of football.

But the filling of the key executive vacancy may be just the start of a stampede of arrivals at Parkhead from Man City.

As revealed by Football Insider, a team of analysts and recruitment experts may follow Harkin, 44, to Glasgow.

Celtic are work on a complete shake-up of their recruitment and football operation on the back of a wretched season in which Rangers marched to the league title.

  11. I think it's pretty obvious at this point that it'll be Harkins and Maresca to be honest..

    I welcome it..

Shaking up the whole backroom staff, recruitment etc is exciting as *, along with what Maresca will bring to us as an attacking outfit..

  12. Happy enough, if true, but would have loved Tognozzi, and would be concerned this move is just part of the usual DD jobs for the boys, tbh.

Doesn’t mean it won’t work or be good for us.

  13. Ralf Rangnick to Schalke has fell through.

    Bring him home :56:

  14. Agreed. There will be a few bumps along the way but long term the positives far out weigh the negatives. Would be great if in 6/7 years there were 4 or 5 of the youths in the and around the first team, pushing to be regular starters.

Just show us the progressive vision Celtic.

  15. Absolutely happy as Larry I'd it's harkin and maresca with a massive influx of coaches, scouts, analysts, physios, the works.

But it does need pointing out that it's wasted money on this recruitment firm if we are just plucking for Desmond's pals again.
Jobs for the boys is still a thing it would seem, even if it is done in a modern approach.

This needs to be an entire backroom staff shake up, to the scale of 20 or so backroom staff coming in the door, from 5 or 6 coach with key specialities, to 8 or 9 scouts to be scouting the world (covid permitting) and 4 or 5 analyst's and 3 physios/fitness coaches...the whole lot.

We are so under staffed it's criminal.
