You’re supposed to be booked if you leave the pitch to celebrate. They’re extremely inconsistent with it though.

Was always my understanding of it for years, which always annoys every fan the country over because of how inconsistent they are with it.

In this case then, everyone of our players that crossed that line should have been booked.

I'd be happy to see the club cut its nose off to spite itself and demand either Broony gets his removed, or the refs actually start doing their * job properly and book them all then.

The logic is they make all the rules up as they go along depending on who it is..

"how the ref interprets the rules" is the go to saying.

Wish they would stop interpreting them and start just enforcing them. The rules are black and white, there really isn't much of a grey area in them.

Not bad for a quick effort, would you be able to tidy it up more, given more time?

I don't think this has ever been the rule mate. The below is from BBC Sport discussing a Robben goal at Blunderland.

    "

    Fifa's rules state that:

    • While it is permissible for a player to demonstrate his joy when a goal has been scored, the celebration must not be excessive.
Fifa directives also discourage the practice of choreographed celebrations when it results in excessive time-wasting and referees are instructed to intervene in such cases.

Although it is not a cautionable offence in itself to leave the pitch to celebrate a goal, it is deemed essential that players return to the field as soon as possible.

Interpretation is the name of the game, with referees expected to act in a "preventative mode" and to exercise "common-sense" in dealing with a goal celebration.

Fifa rules state that a player must be cautioned when:
    • In the opinion of the referee, he makes gestures which are provocative derisory or inflammatory
    • He climbs on to a perimeter fence to celebrate a goal being scored
    • He removes his shirt over his head or covers his head with his shirt"

"Did Weah no get away with it at St Johnstone because although he left the pitch to celebrate with the fans the ref said he got back as quickly as he could?

It’s a Scottish rule, not a Fifa one mate. Directly the SFA. Aye, I think that’s generally the way it’s played now in the Weah situation. They took some amount of stick for it late 00’s if I remember right.

There’s another part to that rule about health and safety.

If they cause fans to surge forward etc and ref feels there is a safety issue they must be booked, I think

Yeah mate. It is obviously open to interpretation which is probably right tbf. But all these commentators over the years saying he had to be booked as he left the pitch were just wrong. That has never been the rule.
