With him and MJ playing it was maybe a bit much to ask of them, it didn’t work mainly because MJ isn’t a winger..

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Timothy Weah was on Celtic’s radar long before his arrival at the club earlier this month.

The 18-year-old American internationalist has made an immediate impact at the club after netting twice in his opening two appearances for Celtic and the PSG player is one whom Rodgers has long been aware of.

Weah signed an extension to his deal with the French side immediately prior to his departure for Celtic with the likelihood being that he will return to his parent club at the end of the season.

But for now, Rodgers is enjoying the opportunity to work with a player that the club tracked extensively this summer.

"We tried to get Timothy last summer,” said the Celtic manager. "We were aware of him and had someone go on his pre-season trip with PSG to watch.

"We found out everything about him, what he was like. If he was going to go on loan, we would be a real option.

"PSG decided to keep him. He was in about the squad at that time.

"But we kept tabs on him and when we got permission to speak to him, Timo flew in with his family.

e had a great day together and we spoke about the culture and what we could do for him.

"It was a real good chance to meet him and we were delighted to bring him in.”

The teenager has struck up an immediate rapport with the Celtic support but while he endeared himself to the Hoops fans with his respect for the club, Rodgers is more concerned that he improves between now and the end of the season.

"He's been all smiles,” said Rodgers. “He knows the opportunity he has here to improve and develop as a player.

"For 18, he's very mature and is very clear on what he wants to achieve. He is a talented boy and like all the guys coming in, they've been struck by the environment.

"It's very much a place to come and learn. They are here to help Celtic but ultimately, all players want to develop and get better.

"Oliver [Burke], Timo and young [Vakoun Issouf] Bayo are on that ladder of learning.

They have settled in well and will develop as they go on, which is what we want.

"The chemistry in the dressing-room is always important.

"I need to have the right profile of person - not just the player.

"Timo has fitted in seamlessly and that's been great.

    Bit of a character.

Would like to see him do that dance as 50,000 Huns launch coins at him after he bangs in his 5th.

If he was banging in his 5th, there would be lucky to be 50 left never mind 50000....

I'm not convinced by the wee man yet. He is someone I like a lot but his first touch doesn't seem to be great. He is very raw, better when he doesn't have time to think.

I reckon wee Mikey Johnston is further along in his development.

Agreed, maybe Timo has more of an upper limit to his potential but right now he's raw as * positionally.
