Tam Rogic

Discussion in 'Ex Players' started by Heisenberg, Jan 17, 2013.

  1. Australia are in a group with Jordan, Palestine and Syria. Even if Rogić were to miss the first game against Jordan, they should progress comfortably. (They would even progress if they were to finish third in their group, for *’s sake!)

As Rodgers says, we regularly make concessions for Rogić to play for his national team. Hopefully, they will reciprocate.

's Asian Cup call-up: "Tom wants to play in the game on the 29th, but he also wants to play for Australia. It's a position the player doesn't need to be in. We hope we can find a solution."

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has urged the Football Federation of Australia to "see sense" and allow Tom Rogic to play against Rangers.

The midfielder, 26, is due to join up with the national squad before the Asian Cup, meaning he would miss the Old Firm game at Ibrox on 29 December.

But Celtic hope to reach an agreement with the FFA to allow Rogic to be in the Celtic squad at Ibrox.

"We hope we can find a sensible solution," said Rodgers.

"At this moment in time he's due to play his last game for us away at Aberdeen and then he's due to fly out to meet up with the Australian squad on the 27th so that would mean him missing the last game [before the Premiership winter break].

"That's not something we're overly happy about because we want to work in a relationship with the federations. I spoke with Graham Arnold, the manager, here and I had two really good days of trying to ensure relations are good between international teams and club teams.

But you do that through working together and what is the best for each player. And we feel Tom can play and be available for the 29th and fly out after the game and meet up in Dubai on the 30th and still be there virtually a week before he's due to play his first game.

"Tom wants to play in the game but he also wants to play for Australia. It's a position the player doesn't need to be in."

    'I don't think it's a sensible solution'
Rodgers is not alone in his frustration, with Hibernian boss Neil Lennon poised to lose three players - Mark Milligan, Jamie Maclaren and Martin Boyle - for the derby meeting with Hearts on 29 December.

Asked if Australia are adamant Rogic has to fly out after the Aberdeen game, Rodgers replied: "Yes. As with the other players. Neil's in a similar position in terms of he's got three players, one of them they didn't even know about until he told them.

"Again, building relations. I think Neil told them about Martin Boyle and all of a sudden he's lost him for a big derby game. I don't think it's a sensible solution if I'm being honest."

Rodgers feels it is particularly galling because Rogic frequently misses club matches because of international commitments.

"A lot of the time he's travelling to the other side of the world to play and we normally forfeit a game when he does come back because of the exertions of travelling across the world, playing for his country, coming back, the tiredness, the fatigue, everything that takes out of him," he added.

"So it's disappointing if we can't find a solution but I'm hopeful that they can see sense with it and see that they could still get their players in good preparation time and be ready for the tournament's start."

Ridiculous situation, we pay the wages and the player has a choice. No way should a national federation be able to dictate this.

  6. still have no clue how the player isn't the first one to decide where he wants to be lol, should be the country last to decide. Also not sure why the Aussie coach needs his players for a over week to prepare for the mighty Jordan, will be interesting to see how the Mooy situation unfolds as well.

  10. International football is a total waste of time and not just because Scotland are rubbish. We fans pay our season ticket and entrance fees to see our best players, if we are playing then international managers must wait for players, or pick someone else. Clubs have a pool of players, countries have populations .

Having already allowed 11 of his 23-man squad to play inside the FIFA window covering January’s tournament, Arnold and the FFA are not prepared to buckle to pressure from Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon, and allow Tom Rogic, Martin Boyle, Jamie Maclaren and Mark Milligan dispensation to play derby matches on December 30.

Rodgers wants Rogic for the Old Firm clash against Rangers, whilst Lennon is eyeing his Socceroos trio for the Edinburgh showdown against Hearts.

Arnold is within his rights to insist players be in camp by Christmas Eve, but decided to allow them to spend Christmas Day with their families and play on Boxing Day for their clubs.

But with Australia facing a vital warm-up match against Oman in Dubai on December 30 - just six days out from their tournament opener against Jordan - the largesse will not be extended to clubs hoping to push the envelope.

“It’s difficult but it is what it is and we have to protect the integrity of our national teams and we will do that,” was the unequivocal message from FFA’s head of performance Luke Casserly.

“In the UK, in particular, it’s a really busy time and it’s a tough period. But, from our perspective, this tournament is once every four years.

“Arnie has been in constant communication with Brendan Rodgers (regarding Rogic) and the fact is nations like Iran and Saudi Arabia are already in camp.

“We haven’t called everybody in at the first possible opportunity. We’ve allowed them to play games.

“But we have our own work to do to prepare for the tournament, and we have left things as long as we can to help the clubs.

“There has to be a cut-off point and we will basically have all the players flying out Christmas night, or Boxing Day night, to assemble in Dubai by the 27th.”

Rodgers said earlier he hoped to “find a sensible solution” and was not “overly happy” at the prospect of losing Rogic after the Boxing Day game against Aberdeen, and ahead of the Rangers clash, insisting the midfielder wanted to play.

But the Socceroos’ hierarchy are unwilling to set a precedent to any club - or player - by deferring their arrivals to ensure that each and everyone is treated with an even hand.

They believe they have already shown more than the required amount of flexibility in what is always a vexed issue.

The fear is that by allowing any exceptions, club coaches will be encouraged to push for endless favours, creating a nightmare scenario for Arnold and the FFA
