    Tactically naive at this level.

In his 3rd season now and HAS had backing, but even the * jakie on the street can see our defence has been abysmal for * know's how long, so what has he done to fix it? * all.

Criminal the amount of soft goals we've lost in Europe under his management, I enjoy attacking fitba as much as the next guy, but our defence is a disgrace - too much focus on our "defenders" wanting to pass a ball (which they * CAN'T) before they can actually defend is disgusting.

We actually resemble Arsenal - good going forward but weak as * in the areas that matter most.

Not even an overreaction here, just a * realism that has been swept under the carpet.

It's a combination of tactics and personnel. Rodgers is still responsible but our defenders look poor at basic defending, especially set pieces.

I agree they are in possession for too long in play, but if they can't even pick up their man in the box then they shouldn't be playing for us at that level.

Has he * had backing. Do you think * like Hayes and Compper were his first choice? It doesn't matter who the manager is, we always bring in * that never gets played - why? Because the manager either did not want them, or they were about 5 pages back on their list of targets.

If we backed him fully and we didn't qualify then fair enough criticise Rogers but we haven't and that's the main problem.

I don't believe for a minute that he's been getting the players in he wanted.

Yeah mate, no backing whatsoever - only smashed the Scottish transfer record with Edouard, £4m on Sinclair, £3m odds on Ntcham etc etc.

Let's look at the defensive players he's signed in his time here :

    De Vries
    Bain
    Gamboa
    Hendry
    Compper

Lucky if £3m spent all in on the area most needing investment.

All he can do is reccomend signings and targets as part of a recruitment team though. It's them who provided him with Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic as our defensive options heading into the most important games of the season. He deserves to be provided with better players after what he has achieved in the last 2 years.

He has to accept an element of responsibility, but the fact remains that we shouldn't be going into Europe with the back line that we had, You'd have to think that we'd be a far better, more organised side with even semi-competent defenders. There's a total disconnect between the back and the rest of the squad and it shows. I have no confidence in them whatsoever and I'm not convinced the rest of the squad does either.

There's almost an arrogance at the board level with them assuming that investment isn't needed to get past these sides. All of whom are champions of their own league and many of whom are solid outfits. What's the point in stockpiling money if it's never going to be invested back into the squad?

Gordon - new long term deal
Jozo - new long term deal
    Hendry - signed for £1.25m
    Lustig - new deal

That’s just tonight and not even mentioning Compper, Gamboa, Izaguirre, Ralston, Miller...

Fully backed him with his comments about the transfer committee stuff at Liverpool and what not but it’s looking more and more likely it was him.

Serious questions need asked about recruitment and quickly.

A sensible post on a night where we will read some amount of dross on here.

Defensive frailties we’ve had since Ronny and as you say, clear for all to see we needed strengthening. * show.

Allegedly smashed the record. I'll wait until the accounts are out to see the real fee paid for Edouard. I seem to remember Simunovic being reported as costing £5.5m, only for it to come out as £2.3m in the accounts.

I’d be shocked if his first choice defensive targets were hendry and comperr I really would, if they were then aye he takes the blame but I really doubt it I think we failed getting his first choices and they were further down the list, that’s just the way we’ve done business for the last decade, cheap always wins out when it comes to players.

As much as he hasn't been backed, he's not even hinted towards wanting to get defenders in. Honestly I can't think of a single good defender the guy has signed in his career. Aye we have played some good football and won trebles but to take the step up he needs to * learn what a good defender looks like

I don’t think I can recall a Celtic team that has such a massive gap in ability between attacking and defending. It’s blindingly obvious that the personnel isn’t good enough, and the limited defenders we do have aren’t well drilled enough. Brendan doesn’t escape blame here.

There are some things at our club that are just amatuerly run, which simply isn’t acceptable. Scouting seems to have regressed and we are clearly struggling to land targets. Contract negotiations are frequently handled poorly with players running into the final year of their contracts.

I hate to say it, but there’s been an arrogance about us this pre-season that is entirely undeserved. From the McGinn saga, to the assumption that we could qualify for the CL without strengthening the squad (actually while weakening it), to the absolute refusal to address our obvious defensive frailties.

There will be people with their head in the sand but denial doesn’t solve any issues. The defence needs strengthened for us to have a successful season, and I include domestic matters in that.
