I never thought Hartley and Robson were that good, very limited players with no pace who could only sit deep in midfield they had decent shots/crosses on them and were not bad passers but mostly for Celtic they couldny really get forward or around the pitch as they were too slow to leave space in the middle of the park. Played in possibly the most boring and average Celtic team in 20 years - to me they were no better than players like Telfer, Naylor and McManus.

Telfer facilitated Naka, Naylor had a good season and completely faded, Mick was a * footballer but a great leader. You're just plucking names from thin air. Hartley and Robson were both far greater goal threats than McGinn and Robson in particular was a better technical footballer.

Were McGinn is just now is he is a dogged combative midfielder who has a load of potential.

Maybe for Hearts and Dundee Utd, for Celtic they were pish goal/attacking threats.

Robson scored like 1 freekick about 4 penalties and only like 2 goals from open play. Hartley scored about 3 goals. They were as big a goal threats for Celtic as Kayal.

Ki, Ledley and Armstrong were goal threats for me.

They were played as holding midfielders, particularly Hartley.

Barry Robson scored against Barcelona and Hartley against Spartak Moscow, what does John McGinn have on his CV even remotely comparable?

You can't really compare them at all considering John McGinn has never even played in the Champions League and is still really young.

Robson and Hartley were top SPL players, players good enough to assist and improve any team in the country at that time.

@borobob will be able to vouch more for his time down South, but even then at probably 33/34, I was still impressed by Robson at that level.

The goalscoring in their times at Celtic is irrelevant really, their games were adapted just like Browns has been.

Hopefully if McGinn comes he can surpass them, we would have a great asset if so.

Grand old team to play for
I'd be happy to see McGinn in the hoops. He's a Tim with a good attitude and a high workrate. Think he's the type of player that would help push his team mates on to get the ten. He's got talent too, it was obvious in the games we played against Hibs last season. And Rogers will help him fulfill his potential.

Its not really irrelevant, they played the way they did for Celtic as they were incapable of doing anything else, they were too slow that if they tried to get forward we'd have been torn to shreds at the back. It's not like they were capable of running te show and defending and attacking and doing anything else - for me they were steady averge bottom level Celtic class players.

I actually checked their goalscoring as I couldn't think of Robson scoring from open play aside from the Barca header. Robson scored 2 headers, 2 freekicks and 3 penalties for us (also missed 2 penalties), Hartley scored 1 header and 3 shots (also missed 1 penalty). Mad to think that Barry Robson never scored from just shooting from open play for us considering when we signed him that's what he was known for mostly scoring from distance.

I think they could have been good Celtic players if we signed them 3 years before we did but by the time we got them they were limited players who never had the mobility.

We played 4-4-2 a lot, their job was generally to sit deep. I'm pretty sure Robson's role was different at Boro and he was more of a driving force at times.

Couple of examples of him getting forward after Celtic, pushing mid 30's.

I have no doubts Robson could of gotten more goals, and altered his play if played in a system that allowed him to more often.

I don't see a lot of left footed central midfielders in the UK. £3million for McGinn is good value for money in comparison with the craziness down south which is only driving the prices up and up.

Both those guys coming in at the right time the TB season won us the league, I think you are doing both a disservice tbh.

We signed Brown for £4.4 million and these guys kept him out the team. They were both great signings and we got more than our monies worth from them.

At this point, he is better than the Stuart Armstrong we signed from Dundee Utd.
And Im certain that he will play more games for celtic than all three of them.

I’m absolutely choking for this to go through, Brendan Rodgers could raise him to a different level.

He’s combatitive, he’s good on the ball, has a good shot, is aggressive, is cery good positionally and is always on the move for the ball.

Rodgers could take him up to a different level very quickly.

Id imagine they just want him to go to whoever will pay the best money. Especially having lost mcgeouch on a free, the spine of their team will not be easily replaced.
I fancy Slivka to get given his chance and to take it. He has everything needed to be a good player for them.

He is already worth more than that. His contract situation may determine that he leaves for less than his value.
