BRENDAN Rodgers summed up Celtic’s second successive treble as a special day for the club and hailed the supporters for inspiring his players towards making history.

Celtic dismantled Motherwell 2-0 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden to close off an incredible season which saw the Hoops become the first Scottish side ever to clinch back-to-back trebles.

Callum McGregor opened the scoring early in the first half when he burst between two Motherwell defenders on the edge of the box, took a touch and then smashed the ball into the top corner on the half-volley.

Olivier Ntcham then scored an equally impressive goal midway through the half. Moussa Dembele’s impressive hold-up play set up his French team-mate and Ntcham drilled a low shot from 18 yards across goal and into the bottom corner.

Brendan Rodgers said it was a privilege to have managed Celtic to a second successive treble but stressed that the real sense of satisfaction came from the joy on supporters' faces.

“It’s a historic day for the players and every one who’s here,” he said. “It’s the first time it’s been achieved.

“It’ll probably take time for me to enjoy it. We’ve got to the end of a really long season, we’ve achieved three trophies and have created history so it’s a real special feeling.

“This is such a great footballing country with a whole raft of players and managers so for us to have done it, and to have been the first team to have done it, is a real privilege and a real special day.

“My thoughts are more with the supporters, the players, all the staff and the board that brought me in a couple of years ago.

“I’m so happy for them that they can really enjoy this. It’s for the supporters. We can be nothing but inspired by the Celtic support. Their commitment to us, wherever we go they’re always there. To give them a day like today and, overall, a moment in history gives me the real satisfaction.”

Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on his players for all they have achieved in the last two seasons, but he stressed that there was room for improvement going forward.

“When you come off the back of a really successful season like last year, it is so easy to go soft, timid and not have the same aggression,” he said. “That was something I was very aware of from the beginning of the season.

“For teams like ourselves, it’s not so much the punches to the head and body that stop you, it’s the pats on the back.

“So we haven’t given out too many of them and we have to continue to work. I think the spirit of the team is strong.

"There's a mentality throughout the team from the players to get better, and that’s important. We can never be satisfied. In this cycle, this era that we’re in, for however long that is, we have to be hungry to succeed."

Would be an amazing addition to the coaching staff.

Not the playing staff, wouldn't be fair on the other teams in the league.

Think he's been out of a job since the Helsingborg relegation. Could be wrong though.

Would love having him as part of the coaching team in some capacity.

Folk will say that we never hit the heights of last season, and I see where they come from if its a question of consistency. But we EXCEEDED the heights of last season when we were at our best this season. We went further in Europe, we pumped the huns harder than ever before.
