At their peaks and on a one off match, fat Ronaldo.

Over the course of their careers, christiano

Well they were heading out in the game against Hungary until Ronaldo popped up with two goals to save them.

Nani also scored and he scored in their other group game a crucial draw versus Iceland, my main point still stands they won it as a very average team not because of Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 16 Champions League goals last season, the Brazilian one scored 14 in his entire career.

He has this uncanny ability of doing * all in a game, but scoring the winning goals, it's really annoying :84:

Game could've been different if the ref didn't forget to send Sergio Ramos off (that's literally what happened, in case you didn't see it).

Brazilian Ronaldo for me. He is one of the most dynamic players I've ever seen. His bursts of speed going past players was mindblowing.

Cristiano is fantastic obviously. I just don't think he has the supernatural talent Ronaldo had. He was also brilliant at the move called the Elastico? Best I've seen at that. Oh wait Ronaldinho is brilliant at that too.

Weirdly C.Ronaldo has won more Balon D'ors than he has Player of the Year in his own League.

He's only won Player of the Year in the League three times, 2007, 2008 and 2014 but has won 4 Balon D'ors 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Ryan Giggs won the EPL Player of the Year when Ronaldo won the Balon D'or in 2009. In 2013, Messi won the La Liga Player of the Year and in 2016 Griezmann won the La Liga Player of the Year.

2014 was the only year he won the League and Balon D'or awards in the same year.

Compared to Messi who has won 5 Balon D'ors and also won the La Liga Player of the Year award in all those seasons too. Messi even won the La Liga Player of the Year award in 2013 when Ronaldo got the Balon D'or.

Could that have something to do with Ballon d'or being done in terms of calendar years?

Dont know probably. Weird though that you could be named best player in Europe more times than best in your own League.

Messi has actually been named best forward in La Liga 6 times to Ronaldo's 1 as well yet in that time Ronaldo has won 3 Balon D'ors. So been classed as the 2nd best forward in his League but the best player in Europe :39:

Flawed system to decide the winner.

    It is understandable.

Greizman won La Liga Player of the Year.

But Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for his two European successes.

In my opinion, the Ballon d'Or should have nothing to do with what your team won, but for how you played. Individually, Messi was better this year, as was Suarez.

Agree 100% There is already an award for teams who win competitions. The competition trophy and medals :56:

Ballon d'Or specifically says best player. So that is obviously Messi or Suarez like you said. Greizman must've been good but there is no way he was better than Messi.

It's supposed to be more authentic now because only seasoned sports journalists are allowed to vote. Why would they vote for team performance then?

    Crazy award.

I did say that I thought it had more authenticity when it was managers and players voting for it, but then someone reminded me that they tended to vote along national lines, so there's a flaw in that too. I don't think such an award should be decided upon by journalists, though. We can see the standard of journalists in the UK, it's clearly not good enough considering some of the * they come away with.

Even if we take into consideration that a lot of them write to provoke a reaction, their footballing opinions aren't as merited as professional players. True authenticity would be having a public vote, plus the opinion of pros, with more weight being added to the professionals' opinions.

Well funny you should say that because Fifa now have their own separate award called The Best Fifa Mens Player.

So that is closer to what you suggested. This ceremony is on January 9th. I can only see Messi winning that but it's hard to be sure. The public will vote for their favourite player a lot.

Wonder how this poll would look if redone, once Cristiano gets his next Ballon D'or.
