I agree the market has changed dramatically since our last big sell van dijk at 12.5 million only two seasons ago.

Great news to see this has been sorted out and Armstrong has signed a new deal. Hopefully we will see him back to his form of last season now.

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has welcomed Stuart Armstrong's decision to sign a new contract but warned a big bid could still see him sold.

The midfielder has penned a new deal that runs until 2019, ending a spell of protracted negotiations and speculation about his future.

Armstrong was linked with a move to the English Premier League throughout the summer and manager Brendan Rodgers suggested the situation had affected the player's performance.

Gordon said the contract would let his international teammate get back to his peak form.

"It's good for him to settle back into things and get back to doing what he does best," he said.

"He was one of our best players last season so to get him tied for another few years is brilliant for us.

"We are delighted he has got that sorted out and can move on and concentrate on our football."

'It's good to get him for another two years, if a big bid comes in then that's another story.'
    Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon
Gordon added: "It's only natural, it tends to take a bit of time to get it sorted out but he's done that now.

"He's a great player for us, a really good goal threat and a really important part of the team, so it's great to get him tied down."

Despite seeing the decision as a boost to the squad, Gordon did not think it would end interest from other clubs and said there were no guarantees any player would stay if the right offer came in.

If he keeps playing the way has been playing I'm sure teams will be interested," he said.

"The amount of money they are capable of paying for players means whether someone is under contract or not it won't make a great deal of difference.

"If somebody wants you they are going to go and get you so I don't think it makes that much difference."

He added: "He could still move next week, if someone was to pay an over-the-top fee then that is what would happen.

"It's good to get him for another two years, if a big bid comes in then that's another story."

I don't care if he stays or goes now. He'll soon realise that every player is replaceable at Celtic. He'll also do well to get back in the team ahead of Ntcham.

This was so unnecessary at such a critical time of the season. Then to sign for only a year is a bit of an insult.

An extra year? That all? Pessimist in me thinks if ntcham carries on and eboue kicks on and even benyu performs albeit he's more winger I could see Stu being sold in Jan.

I imagined he would be tied up until 2020, this looks like he wants to try himself somewhere else.

Yeah he may come to regret this.

Leaves a bitter taste that one of our key players basically rules himself out of our huge qualifiers and then when CL is guaranteed signs a one-year extension.

Be interesting to see what Brendan's first choice midfield is. Stuart has a bit of work to do to win over the fans who supported him with his song all through this.

Got to laugh at folk who moan cos he hasn't signed a new deal, and then moan when he does sign because it's a shorter deal than they'd like.

Armstrong was great last year. For 6 months. His adviser (giving the football player who is/was studying law the benefit of the doubt) has possibly cost him his place in our team. He wasn't our best player last year, wouldn't have won it the year before playing as well as he did and won't win it this year.

Hope he doesn't get too big for his boots.

Saying all this, I am happy he signed. There's just something not sitting right with me at the moment.

If he gets rid of his adviser, I admit that my opinion will probably change a bit.

Celtic have covered the self as well I suppose, if he did go on to have a shiter of a season you could say oh well, then if he performs week in week out you then name your price in Jan or right at the beginning of next summer!

Wondering how much we should read into those comments from Craig Gordon. Armstrong may still leave before the end of the month.

I have a feeling the next 4 months of inconsistent appearances will see him down the road in January and at this point I have to be honest and say I couldn't GAF.

His issue now is the 3 guys he's in direct competition with; Ntcham, McGregor and Rogic are all better footballers despite not having as big a goal threat. In Europe in particular Rodgers will go with the 3 composed ball players more often then not.

Don't know mate Armstrong has a better engine than Rogic or McGregor his energy levels are outstanding..

I agree they are better on the ball and it's great to have all as options..

I don't think he'll be going anywhere tbh, Brendan mentioned earlier today he's glad this is finally sorted, and Stu can now concentrate on his football.

There will be times his legs are a better fit in a particular game but at this point it looks like it will be the last half hour of games to either carry the ball or nick a goal.

    Just reading between the lines.

We're talkin about a guy that rattled in 17 goals last season, that's an excellent return from a midfielder, i'm sure Brendan will want to see him recapture that form for this season.
