Super Bario, King Street Glasgow

Discussion in 'TalkCeltic Pub' started by trip2themoon, Dec 14, 2016.

  1. Not sure if there's been a discussion about this new arcade pub. It was supposed to open back in the Spring but due to the premises being in a listed building it's taken them ages to get the planning permission to start fitting it out. Supposed to be opening this month. I can't wait to get a shot of Street Fighter 2 Turbo in an arcade again. I have it in my Capcom Classics on the PS2 but Sony pads are * for fighting games. Got it on MAME but it's just not the same playing it with a pad. Here's the games list from their Facebook page:

    Street Fighter II Turbo
    Mortal Kombat II
    Ridge Racer
    Tekken 3
    Pac-Man
    Vs Super Mario Brothers
    Sega Rally (1995)
    House of the Dead
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989)
    Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
    Aliens
    Metal Slug
The King of Fighters (various years)
    The Last Blade.

I'm not bothered about the Midway and SNK fighting games but looking foward to SF2 Turbo and Tekken 3. I hope they don't have the cheap 2 player Turtles machine and managed to get the 4 player version. Played Moonwalker on the Mega Drive but would like a shot of the coin op since the Mega Drive and Master System versions weren't conversions of the arcade game. A proper arcade needs Double Dragon, Golden Axe and R Type.

  2. I've always wanted to go to a pub filled with hipsters and nerds.

  3. I don't give a * who's in the place, as long as I can get a mug of hot chocolate and a shot a Street Fighter I'll be happy. Me and my mates will go in and show these young * how to play the game. Why even post here though if the thread subject matter is of no interest to you?

This sounds like the ideal pub for you then. Great.

  7. I'm not sure how to reply to that.

But anyway, let us know how you get on in the arcade game pub :50:

  8. Arcade pub, i'm game. :50:

  9. There was a thread about this place a while ago. Will give it a look when I'm home.

  10. I'll kick his * in...

At Street Fighter 2. That's the only way I can fight...:56:

  11. When I was about 14 me and a few mates used to go to Treasure Island on Jamaica Street to play the Japs at Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Not sure if those guys were actually Japanese but we always associated them with Japan because they were oriental and the game is Japanese.

Going to be meeting up with the same mates when (if) the place opens. Not sure if I'll still be any good at it. It should be like riding a bike.

On their Facebook page they said that the above games list is not the full list. I hope they don't bother with late 70s games like Space Invaders or early 80s games like Pac Man. It was around 1985 that arcade games started to get really good. When you fire up really early arcade games on MAME because they are so basic they get boring really quickly.

Konami are one of the best games manufacturers ever. Their arcade collection on the PS1 was a massive let down because it was a collection of all their ancient stuff like Circus Charlie when they should have been putting out stuff like Turtles, Simpsons, Vendetta and Violent Storm.

  13. Never played that but it looks great. Didn't know that SNK were still using the Neo Geo system as far along as 1996.

  14. It was a lot of fun, as an 8 year old on holiday in Portugal. I think I went around shouting 'Metal Slug' for a couple of weeks afterwards.

  15. People used decry the Neo Geo console for its expensiveness but weren't really taking into consideration what you were getting for your money. When you bought something like Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the SNES or Mega Drive you were getting a conversion of the original and it was to be honest a weaker version of the original. With the Neo Geo consle you were getting the arcade game and not a conversion. When you look at for what it really was £200 for an arcade game is not that expensive. I'd love a Neo Geo now but they go for silly money these days. One of the big, chunky 4 button joysticks is worth about £100.

By 1996 the Neo Geo CD was available in the home and that made it affordable. It had the same spec as the cartridge system. My mate bought the CD around 1994, it was great being able to play the Samurai Showdown arcade game in the home. I have Samurai Showdown for my SNES, it's a decent conversion but still lacking compared to the original. The scaling of the fighters mid-fight was a great feature of the game that was missing from the SNES version. Other SNK fighters like World Heroes and Art of Fighting are available for the SNES but the CD for the Neo Geo cost about the same as a SNES cartridge.
