How exactly are we weaker by signing a younger, possibly better player and getting rid of a player who is most of the time unfit for 2-3 million?

It is a bit of a risk mate aye but Matthews came here as a 19 year old and showed us what he could do as well.

Time for us to back Janko and I have alot of optimism that he will do well here.

    How?

If Matthews didn't want to sign a new contract then there's not much we can do.

Who's to say whether Ronny wanted to keep him or not? Contracts are not handled by him, and I think a lot of what goes on behind the scenes is not in his hands.

If he can manage to stay injury free, I think Adam will take the EPL by storm.

Your being selective there both Hooper and Ledley were never going to sign new deals, and the other 2 are open to debate whether they deserved new deals or not, i stick by that this is good business for both us and Matthews cause it had run its course

Matthews was actually one of my favourite players.

Was he the best right back at the club?? I think you could argue that. I felt he never let us down and in our biggest game last season against inter which we drew I felt he was the player that gripped the game by the throat and went at inter with no fear.

But I also highly rate lustig and was comfortable with either off the two starting champions league games for us.

The problem lies in either off the two haven't been blessed with injury free seasons and always a worry both could be out at the same time.

Young fisher is a player that's seems abit closer to the first team than most of the other young lads. And with two quality players in front of him it was hard to see him get game time. I thought we would have to send him out on loan, which I still think we will do because janko has arrived.

The young Swiss boy has been heavily touted as a serious player and without assurances off certain amount off first team opportunities I don't think he would have signed here. So if delia rates the lad that highly two then I would expect either lustig or Matthews to leave. But would have decent value and if we have back up then we could use that money to strenghen other areas of the team.

Talking about back up,we would still have ambrose a World Cup right back to compete in that area off the field. So it's fair to see something had to give.

Now I'm not saying Matthews wasn't gonna sign another extension, but with only 6 months before he can sign a pre contact and leave on a free 2m for a player far from garenteed a start is great money considering it's our strongest area in the squad.

I think only stokes and ambrose would be worth that money that aren't first choice.

All in all it's a good move for Sunderland and it's a good move for us, and with the best off luck it's a good move for adam

Agreed absolutely. The value of a BPL version of Matthews doesn't change his ability. We al know the values are inflated, I just feel the whole thing has been handled very poorly. I would have no problem with Matthews refusing an extension with 2 years remaining on his contract and being sold, but it should never have got to this stage.

That's complete guesswork, to be honest. Regarding alot of things then yes he will have very little say but if he wanted to keep Matthews we would have done alot more to do so.

To think he didn't have a say in this is just being a bit silly. Why would we target and sign Janko if that was the case?

If Lennon is becoming Leicester manager, he should steal in and sign him before Sunderland. He's much better than their other options in that position.

You offer the new contract earlier and sell earlier if he isn't going to sign. Imo we shouldn't even be getting to the stage where players have 18 months less because value just declines exponentially.

The alternative is guesswork, as well. I have no doubts Ronny drew up a shortlist and Janko may have been one of the players on that list...there's a lot of business still to do, but retaining players that can come into your first team comfortably and not drop a level is essential to overcoming barriers like the qualifying for the CL.

Time will tell, perhaps he wanted to leave and we had no choice, but I find it disappointing we didn't offer him a new deal.

My point is that if they weren't signing they should have been sold long before they were.

Fair enough, but there has to be clubs wanting to sign him. What if last season nobody showed any interest in him? All this stuff is behind the scenes so we can't really comment on it.

Ledley - Yes. We could've sold him but we needed him to play, so we took the hit and let his contract run down. if we had sold him earlier for more money the fans would have given pelters. We sold him after replacing him with Johansen I think.

Samaras - Yes. He wasn't playing and was obviously deemed surplus to requirements. No one would pay for him.

Hooper - Similar to Ledley. Also wanted to leave, wouldn't sign a new contract. could've sold him for more in January before Juventus game but took the hit financially to keep a fans favourite for a massive tie.

Kelvin Wilson? - Guy was homesick and went back to his old club. I think we got £3m for a bosman. Brilliant business.

I would imagine there would be some interest somewhere but it's all conjecture. Just frustrating to see another player get to the stage where its a case of 'sell or walk away for free.'

    I like Matthews. Always have.

However Deila will definitely have had a say in this, I'm 100 percent sure on that. If he was given Janko as an alternative and saw him as a good enough replacement then who are we to sit and judge.

Time will tell, as you say. However I don't think this will come back and bite us on the * as much as many in here seem to think.

A great servant to the club, and it's sad to see him go.

But I really cannot say I'm that gutted. He's second choice for us imo (when Lustig's fit)

But he really has been a good player, and a move to the prem for him is best for all parties imo. Fair play to him, and I wish him all the best.

Now let's hope Lustig can stay fit. Then we can loan Fisher out for a season, and have Janko as our 2nd choice (or may even fight for first place, who knows)

    All the best Adam. :50:
