Personally disappointed. Was dynamite for us under Lennon and put in many impressive performances on the European stage. Made worse by, what I believe to be, the low fee we are letting him go for.

he seemed to struggle with injury over the past two seasons and I think this has hindered his progress in reaching his potential. Had he maintained his fitness, I believe he would have kept Lustig out of the team. Quiet, no drama player with good attitude.

Another departure which further emphasises this new era.

Good point. Sometimes there is value in just letting the players deal run out. It can help us negotiating in the future. 2m if true is despicable. With one year left on his deal I would be upset if we took 4 for him but I could probably live with it. He will be worth 15m this time next season as he will be an established PL right back.

Not at all, I think Matthews is a great player so don't give me that.

£2m for a player with a year left on his contract and hasn't been first choice since his first season. What isn't good about that? Just because we've had a few decent transfers for our best players recently doesn't mean every player is magically worth loads of cash. Where would you rate Matthews in a list of our best players? Seriously?

Sorry but that is one of the worst things I've read on this. He's the second choice right back here and Chris Gunter starts more than him for the Wales national team. You're massively overrating him.

If you cannot see how losing a player of his quality, experience and potential makes us weaker then I cant explain it to you.

    If it aint broke.

He has seriously stagnated as a player over the last two seasons, thats when injury allows him to play, i hate to see your meltdown when Van Dijk is sold :smiley-laughing002:

He has 150 appearances in 4 seasons for us. Not bad for a player with a bad injury record...:smiley-laughing002:

In terms of current market value I would put him behind VVD, Lustig, izaguirre, Biton, Brown and Johansen. I can't get into where he is ability wise, at his best he's a very good player who is still young and performed at the top level. My main point isn't regarding his ability but his overall situation. Matthews, Ledley, Hooper and Samaras have all ran down their contracts and left for a fraction of their worth. This was almost allowed to happen to commons too. Our handling of our own players contracts is very poor imo and almost unprofessional.

If he stays injury free and with a full season under his belt he will be an established homegrown PL player. What is the going rate down there for that craic 10m easy.

How many did he start or finish, and we play about 60 games a season

One thing is the fee, but is there a percentage of the next transfer fee in the deal? Obviously exposure to English Premier League football will more or less automatically raise his value. If he is sold internally in that league, Celtic should ensure that there is a percentage of that fee going to them.

Great post. The most frustrating thing is how this is a recurring pattern

Aye, but that's for players who are good enough. Matthews will be playing for a relegation battling Sunderland, he's not going to be doing much attacking and he can't defend very well. I'll be shocked if he has a good season down south.

Look at Andy Robertson, he had a great season up here, went down to a similar sort of team and struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting eleven.

£2m would be a good deal for us I think.

The thing is maybe Sunderland dont value their players on how much cash they will/can get for them. The true value of a player is what he gives your squad on the park. It is irrelevant if his market value is 10 or 15m or whatever. He will be a proven EPL player and we will look like mugs.

Robertson smashed it down South and has been linked with £10m moves away!
