Moving to America how easy is it?

Plan carefully, New York is one of the most expensive places in the world to live, although it is still well worth it.

 

Don't do it mate, she will have left you after six month's, you will then become an alcoholic and be dead before you're 50

 

Any American parents or grandparents?, if so you're onto a winner.

There's plenty of other cities that are more affordable and have all the same amenities

 

About a dozen nicer and better cities, too.

The US tend to be finicky about letting people in, though. Good luck.

 

All depends really. I moved here just over 5 years ago but my wife is American so was pretty plain sailing. If you have family or a guaranteed job then it will be easier than if you don't have any of that. There are plenty of different types of Visa's too and you need to make sure you get the right one. I know that sounds obvious, but you wouldn't believe the amount of people who get one type of Visa thinking that will do and they get the wrong one.

Unless you have your heart set on it, I'd probably try moving to another area other than New York purely for price. Extremely expensive to live there.

 

I was sponsored by the US company (AT&T), so it was relatively easy for me.
I did go through 4 interviews for the role.
As it is VERY expensive to live and work in NYC; so I rented an apartment (or should I say that the company part rented) in Hoboken NJ, just across from NYC via the subway using PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson).
This was 1997 and I only stayed for 2 years (ish).

All I will say is that living and working in the US is FAR DIFFERENT than visiting as a tourist.
It's an unforgiving place if you are not prepared.

I went from being a novelty (I am English) and invitations to all and sundry; to being a threat to the indigenous workforce.

Sponsorship from a US company meant that I was better suited for that role than an indigenous job seeker/professional, so the resentment after the 6 month honeymoon period was impalatable to me.

New York is great for a holiday, but I doubt I'd want to stay there.

If you have no family ties or don't have a profession that is in demand, your chances aren't too great.

Why New York?

 

Go onto their visa site and you can complete an eligibility assessment.
If you both pass then good.
At this point, look at us properties were you want to live plus check out job prospects.
If you can get a sponsor then it would make it easier to get a work visa.
