hard to define, technically you need to look at guys like petrucci, vai, malmsteen etc although I couldn't listen to more than 5 mins of their shredding stuff as it is pretty boring, but theres no doubting their talent, then you have guys like dave Gilmour who aren't on the same wavelength as those guys technically but writes the most incredibly melodic solos, it's impossible to say who is the "best"

Rick Parfitt of Quo is the world's best rhythm guitarist. Lead guitarist is more difficult. Gary Moore R.I.P, Jimmy Page, Jerry Cantrell, Kirk Hammett, Lindsey Buckingham are all great guitarists but the best was Hendrix.

Hendrix by miles. Also a big fan of Johnny Marr who is one of the most influential and knows how to "play to serve the song" better than anyone.

I'd have to pick Chuck Schuldiner, the guy had unbelievable talent with a guitar. Although my personal favourite would have to be Dave Mustaine.

Agreed. Not so much nowadays though since Muse went all Queen on us but some of his earlier stuff was savage.

For some reason modern guitarists don't feature much when talking about "greatest ever".

Still probably Hendrix for me though, even though I'm not a huge fan of his music I can appreciate his genius.

Gilmour too, *, can't believe i forgot about him.
