JVOH is by far one of the worst target men i have seen. For a guy of his size and stature he fails to win headers,is easily muscled of the ball and for the most part has terrible hold up play.
Maybe it's because i've been used to Hartson and Sutton over the past few years and i'm trying to compare him to those two. Maybe it's because he is Dutch and prob not used to the style of play that we ask of him,(but big Pierre was Dutch and could do all 3).
I don't have the stats(someone will) but his scoring record is fairly average for someone with his price tag.

I have been trying for a while too 'get into him' but it's just not happening, for me anyway.

Hows everyone else's opinion,'cause after all that's all it is.

    Hail Hail

I really thought he'd do the business for us bu i'm not sure about him either. He never looks fit and his mobility is shocking. I'm not sure if our crosses are just rubbish or whether he doesn't attack the ball enough. I think he needs dropped as he's 1st pick at the moment but not on merit.

Didn't upset me - I agree (plus his injury time is way too much)

And just to add some more coal to the flames....the Brown/Donatti midfield experiment - for the SPL it will work fine, for the CL they were overawed and impotent last night

I am way pleased that we got through (with a bit of a sore heid), but that midfield needs experience and we don't have time to give them that.

Strachan seemed to suggest that this years Champions League was nothing more than experience for quite a young squad. I think the group stage is our level and anything else is a bonus anyway. When you look at pot one you find what sort of cash investment is required to get close to winning it.

Jvoh did good last night I think, all he needed were some more decent crosses and am sure than if that player had not tackled tackled him when he had one on one with the keeper he would have scored.

Hartson got this type of abuse aswell, Jvoh just needs to settle in with a good partner hopefully mcdonald.

Yeh I thought Jan had a generally good game yesterday, I blame the ref for some really soft free kicks he gave away. Hard to get your head on the end of a cross when you're the only striker in the box but he looked seriously comitted last night, hopefully he'll develop a gd partnership with McDonald

I'm not for one minute putting a dampner on last nights great result or suggesting that the team as a whole need's a complete overhaul.
Fiferjim's correct, the group stages is our limit anything else is a bonus.

Maybe i'm missing somehting with him but have too disagree with you Gaffney, i thought he was poor last night. I feel as though Scott MacDonald had better hold up play. Yes,he got the man sent off last night(very harsh i thought) but that apart i don't remember him doing anything of significance, that's if you don't include him losing the ball in the air for Spartaks goal!!.

*,someone show me the light and prove me wrong.

P.s Do agree with fiferjim again,as with Naylor, he has no direct competition unlike the Hartson/Sutton days

I think we have cover in the striker position and he could be dropped.

Starchan sid last night e has a strong spine of a team but lacking numbers in wide positions. I totally agree so hopefully he'll getsome business done before close of the transfer window..

I don't think the group stage 'Is our limit' as you and FiferJim` put it. I think we are better than that. We are capable of a lot more and we shouldn't be settling for being in the group just to make up the numbers. We are Celtic Football Club and we are a club who plays to win. I want to win the Champions' League and I know to do that it will take guts, skill, teamwork, fan support and a lot of luck. However, not all those things go for you at the same time and therfore winning it is hard for EVERY team.

I think we are good enough to at least get to the quarter finals. Celtic, like a lot of clubs, play better against good opposition. When we play against the likes of Falkirk we step down a bit to their level. It can't be helped. We use our strengths and skills and experience to beat them, but we still are playing close to their level/ When we play against top class teams we raise our game and people seem to be impressed. I certainly am.

We have a better squad than last season and whoever are unlucky enough to get us in their group will know that we are a European force again and are champing at the bit to get the best, juiciest bits from the top table. They won't fancy coming to Celtic Park and we will have more experience this season when we go to their place.

I am optimistic about this season and can't wait for the draw. We fear no one. So Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manure, A.C. or Inter and anyone else, I say this:

    BRING IT ON!

I didn't say it's our limit i said it's our level. Big difference. We can rise above that level with all those things you mentioned luck, team work etc. but with the money we spend i dont think we should be sacking the manager if we don't make the semi finals which is what happens to the Madid manager etc. just ask the last guy and he won them the league for the first time in ages.

I don`t think JVOH is helped too much by Naka and McGeady playing on the wrong side of the park. They need to cut inside to play the ball across and that gives defenders an opportunity to get ready for the cross.

Big Bad John had Thompson firing in crosses from the left first time while he still had space.

I think JVOH is a good player that isn`t helped by the way the team is set out. And I though the ref was a right *, last night. Blew his whistle anytime he went near the ball.

    My mistake. Sorry FJ.
I agree we should not be shouting for Wee Chesney's head, even if things had gone the other way last night. I think we have the best manager in Scotland and one of the best in the UK in WGS and long may his time at CP continue.:50:

They forgot to tell the ref that football is a contact sport.

Yeah i agree if we hadn't went through the blame would lie with the players lack of ability/luck in front of goal. NAKA should have scored and JVoH would have taken a long time to recover from his en miss if we'd went out.

McDonald should`ve added a second as well. Looking back on that game, we should`ve cruised through by 3 or 4 goals.

Instead the * made me sit through penalties!! :47: I`ll let them off this time though!:84:

imo this is the worst group of strikers we have had in years.

JVoH mite come good if we can actually put a striker of genuine class up there along side him because at the moment the people he has been paired with are not good enough

Could not agree more sir. That's where my original opinion stems from. Who is going to get us 25+ goals from the squad of forwards we have? I'll leave MacDonald out of this for now as his record for Motherwell was fantastic.
Riordan was another who had a great scoring record at Hibs but we all know he's not going to be first pick.

Henke67, that's why i love Celtic fans. For every realist like me there's an optomist like you. Now not for one second am i saying that i don't want Celtic to win the CL,of course i do! It's just that in the financial climate of todays football, i cannot see Celtic lifting the CL trophy in my lifetime. I hope someone will stick this right up me at the end of the season but i doubt it......
