That reminds me, it is has been a while since I ate horse steak. I doubt the meat of competitive racing horse would be any good though.

What's funny? I'm being deadly serious. Why should I automatically value the life of the jockey over the life of the horse? Their lives are of equal value. At least the jockey made a conscious decision to go racing, if he dies he dies because of a decision he made. The horse doesn't get to make that choice.

Some famous quotes that I very much believe in.......................

"People talk sometimes of a * cruelty, but that's a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as a man, so artistically cruel. The tiger only tears and gnaws, that's all he can do. He would never think of nailing people by the ears, even if he were able to do it."
    - Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”
    Immanuel Kant

“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.”
    Albert Schweitzer

Human beings are the cruelest species living on this planet. They are no more deserving of compassion than animals are. There are plenty people in this world who if I could save them from a burning building or the save the life of an animal trapped in the same building I would choose the animal.

Im not a Ruby Walsh fan, but in essence he is right.
People in the horse racing world do generally love their horses, but there are others who have affection for them, but are more pragmatic in their attitude, like Walsh.

I go racing quite often, and it pains me to see a horse being killed, but i also know they wouldnt be alive if not for racing.
The vast majority are very very well looked after, better than many humans in this world.

Regarding the injuries....they dont put them down for the * of it.In many cases with valuable horses, they will all be taking a big loss financially.I dont know exactly how it works, but i dont think it would be feasible to insure National Hunt horses.......so i dont think they get anything back, so clearly to kill it, is a last resort. They are killed as humanely as possible, and the vast majority of the time, there really isnt anything to be done.

I watched a Mark Johnston horse (Turnbuckle)the other week win its first and last race!I backed it too, but my meagre winnings were meaningless knowing it had died!

It actually badly broke down about 30 yards from the line, but because of its momentum, it crossed the line still running but effectively with 3 legs.....and won!
This was a potential valuable horse. It was well bred and owned by a top owner who could afford the treatment if it had been possible to heal it.

It is always sad to see a beautiful animal become a slab of meat.........but at least those that dont die are generally well looked after. :-/

Would it be wrong for someone to hit a fly with a rolled up newspaper?

If they won't go out the window the they're fair game. If the survive 5 attempts at getting them I let them live, they earned it.

Ruby Walsh fell and broke his arm today. Some would call that karma.

    'Mon the horses!

I hope those of you that think it's shocking don't bet on the horses. They wouldn't be driving them to death if you were betting on them.

Do you believe all living (sentient?) creatures are of equal value? Does your equality hold true for fish, insects, birds, etc? Or do you place more value in some life form over others?

I am very interested in this subject, and sympathetic to your argumemt, but people do seem to lack consistency when it comes to the relative merits of animal life.

And on a side note, if a horse didnt want to race surely it wouldn't race? (Genuine question)

I would feel more sorry for a Horse that gets killed or injured than a jockey as it had no choice. Little jockey * know what they're getting in to.

    EDIT- already been said :52:

He didn't say a lot wrong tbh. The horses are treated like royalty throughout their life to do something no other horses can. A horse with unrepairable limbs has ran its course (pardon the pun) and should be grateful for the life it got.

Yes I think all sentient creatures lives are of equal value. A bird's life is as precious as a human's life. A life is a life, we're all *'s creation. Christianity dictates that human life is the most precious of all but that is one of the tenets of Christianity that I have trouble with and can't really reconcile myself to.

I will admit to being guilty of the inconsistency you speak of though. For example, someone swatting a fly wouldn't upset me whereas the killing of whales or elephants or cruelty to cats or dogs really does upset me. That's probably wrong of me but I'm not alone in falling into that way of thinking.

Horses do occasionally refuse to race. I'm not against horse racing per se as galloping and jumping are in a horses nature and so I don't believe horse racing in itself is cruel. What I do object strongly to though is the whipping of horses and the casual attitude of people towards the lives of horses when they have to be destroyed(as shown by Ruby Walsh's comments). If a horse falls and has to be destroyed and the jockey breaks his arm in the same fall there seems to be far more concern shown for the jockey than the horse. That really sticks in my throat.

Go an take a look back at history and see what pain real men had to go through just survive.

    * horses, if it really pains you as much, go and receive one up the * from a horse and see what real pain is.

If "news" (it's not news) like this pains you as much then go and get * off one, see how much your ringpiece is laughing after a session with ra grand stallion.

We live in a generation of poofters, imagine we got invaded by someone with swordsv- there would be * thinking aw no my pony will get chopped or well thats inconveinent i was waiting on my fish n chips n now im gonna get slashed.

Away n take a fly * to yerselfs ya roasters.

Sensitive men will be the end of the world.

Take a grand look at yourself and sit back and cry into your comfort blanket, chinos and jesus braclet.

    Just die already
