Just curious to what you think America would look like now if the Confederate Army had won the Civil War.

Hard to tell of course but I think there would have been a few big differences.

The obvious one is that slavery would have carried on until the 1920s. Also, there is an argument that the USA wouldn't exist in the sense that it exists today as there would be a split between certain states. There would have been a Western State collective while Texas and Cali may have also separated. But I would guess after the great depression, the country would have united in the same way it did.

Also, they may not be the world power they are at the moment (for good and bad). The Civil War was really a fight over the means of production more than anything else. Had the South won, the industrial North would have been devastated for a long time and the means of production that led to the rise of the USA would have no been there, or at least would have been a lot weaker.

    Really pushing the idea...
The union wouldn't have extended to the West Coast meaning Hawaii would never be part of the USA, which would mean no Peal Harbour, which would mean no reason for the USA to get involved in WW2, which might have meant the Nazis taking Europe.

On a side note, I love the American South. My favourite place I have been.

The original "Stars and Bars" flag would have been changed to the "Rebel" or "Dixie" as the national flag for starters.
Agree with the Hawaii theory, and of course California probably would be part of Mexico or at least further conflicts would have ensued to gain control.
Lincoln would have been hanged and Jefferson Davis would have continued as President.
Renumeration would have been paid to the South in such numbers that "old money" would still be running America.
Better links with Britain through the continuing slave trade would as a conseqeunce keep Britain to the forefront of sea power and trade.
    And my thought provoking statement:

Britain probably would become the 50th state of America.:87:

I too love the south - North Carolina in particular:rolleyes:

The main difference would be that the southern states would have their independence. The Union would most likely continue to exist, but without the southern states (which form a separate country).

Slavery would probably be abolished in the Union, but I think the independent states would follow later on.

NASCAR would replace Baseball as the "national past time".

Off topic really but I was reading about America before it was colonised, apparently it was plentiful with Native Americans and America was basically built atop an apocolypse event for them, which wiped out more than 90% of the population due to plague.

Imagine if that plague didn't happen, what the world would be like?

Would be like the rest of the UK taking on the South/West England. No real chance of winning.

Actually the civil war allowed the North to pass bills (with the Southern Senators gone) allowing the trans-continental railroads to be built, linking the now-modern USA together.

California was already a Union state. The rest of the western USA (then territories) were anti-slave (apart from 2,3) and controlled by the Union.

Nope, the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan were formed after the Civil War by Confederate veterans to fight against what they percieved as the black man gaining more power and freedom. So if the South won the war, the KKK would never have been founded as slavery would not have been abolished

I'm sure there is a film about this very subject called The Confederate States of America.
